The U.S. Postal Service has adopted a new rule that could create doubt about whether some ballots mailed by voters by Election Day will receive postmarks in time to be counted.
A USPS rule that took effect on Dec. 24 says mail might not receive a postmark on the same day the agency takes possession of it. The postal service says it isnt changing its existing postmark practices and is merely clarifying its policy, but some election officials have looked to postmarks as a guarantee that mail ballots were cast before polls closed.
The new rule holds implications for 14 states and Washington, D.C., that count ballots arriving after Election Day if they are postmarked on or before that day commonly called a ballot grace period. In these states, ballots placed in the mail by voters before the deadline may not be counted if the postal service applies a postmark after Election Day.
The USPS rule says that the postmark date does not necessarily indicate the first day that the Postal Service had possession of the mailpiece.

Luckily, up here in WA state, we also have drop off boxes.

(2,721 posts)Edit: Nevermind maybe it does work that way here, I just never noticed because I always use the "Subscribed" (My Subs) forums or the "Latest Discussions" functions. When you mix the forums in this view, kicking doesn't work like this, but if you go straight to the forum, it does. My bad on that!!!

(2,721 posts)It does work if someone specifically visits the GD Forum index itself, but does not for the forum aggregating functions like My Subs or Latest Discussions which are how I use DU. My bad! Kick away!

(2,721 posts)I don't even know why anyone would assume it would be, that's what not a postmark is, so this article (and esp. the headline) doesn't really make much sense to me
DeJoy sucks of course but this is not a change in the postmarking process. Mail your ballots early like the instructions on every one I've ever seen says that you should do, and you'll be fine. Or drop it off somewhere that you know it will be counted if you're running late, don't mail it. You can also show up to the polling place in some states with your mail-in or absentee ballot in hand, hand it over, and get a new ballot to use there.

(12,337 posts)It is too under the radar. It is guaranteed to disenfranchise certain ballots. New Chicanery between now and then could be even worse, even to the point of suddenly "privatizing" the entire service and throwing the entire ballot system into convenient inconvenience to all voters. The fact we have to look out for our ballots in DU misses the main point that many if not most voters are/will be ignorant of this utterly needless"reduced standard". Where are our Dems on the Postal oversight committees? Where is the party's competence for political survival by protecting the vote? Are we STILL expecting a media-suppressed blue wave deluge to wipe out all our worries? Getting back enough swing voters to eke out a small majority, maybe claw back a few gerrymandered states?
Trump leans heavily though stupidly on cheating of all types. It would be nice to counter SOME of them- and the reptiles enabling them.

(12,337 posts)the pushing off of a final date DOES negate a lot of efforts by all postal employees, top to bottom to find and date the ballots on that LAST day, whether they are cancelled or not. Arriving mail is forcibly delayed after a certain time depending on your area- which most people are not aware of. The cancellation machines are simply shut down way earlier than they have to be. Why? The mail DELIVERY will be delayed anyway. This forces them to be cancelled the next day and AGAIN be delayed for processing until the day after for delivery- the next day after that! Consolidation of operations is even crueler to misaddressed election materials being sent hundreds of miles to fewer centers for correction and re-entry to entire process- from a distance with little power to address local issues with those pieces.
For those worried about election mail ending up in waste bins or the odd good pieces trapped in such, it too is shipped far out of sight of anything approaching local care. You have no idea how we saved and sequestered even badly addressed campaign mail before losing this power completely. How we sent last minute ballots by free Express delivery and dated every one.
Mail ballots and bill payments earlier than you would a Christmas card!

(6,142 posts)hand-stamped postal date but they must go to a postal employee at the post office and request it. Is that accurate? If so, it would be more hassle, but something that has to be done.

(40,072 posts)Start opening and counting the ballots upon receipt. Don't wait until the end of election day to start opening the mailed ballots. I think it would create more excitement for mailing early ballots if they did this.
The mailed ballots could be processed, and counted, ready to add to the total once the polls close. Instead, they sit untouched, sometimes for weeks, until after the polls have closed and reported results.
