Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs there a fake Rachel Maddow YouTube channel called 'Maddow's brief'?
I was watching a video on YouTube and when it finished among the recommended choices was what was purported to be a Maddow video concerning Canada cutting off potash shipments to the US. Sounded interesting and important. I had not heard something like that happening.
I started to watch and after a couple of minutes I noticed that she was using her hands a lot. Hadn't seen that before from her. I stopped the video to look at the notes for the video but couldn't get it on my TV.
I started watching again and stopped after about 10 seconds. This sure didn't seem like Rachel.
After doing some looking I concluded it was an AI deep fake. So how can someone take a person like Rachel and basically use her image to sell lies? And if that is true what could Rachel do to stop them?
Thanks for any help.

This video has good info on the problem:

(52,226 posts)Though reporting AI on the Internet is like playing whack-a-mole. They get taken down one day, but show up again the next.
Meanwhile, you certainly should also post in the comments if you believe something is fake.
Edit to add: I reported "Maddow's Brief" and posted in the comments. I wonder, if someone is being impersonated on YouTube, do they sue the fake channel or YouTube?

(5 posts)If you click on the username on YouTube, you will see that all of the video thumbnails are identical. That is a reliable indicator of fake, clickbait posts. To report a user on Youtube, click on the username, then on more, and finally on the Report user button. When reporting, mention any evidence (identical thumbnails, not a known posting method for Ms. Maddow, any signs of a deep fake, etc.)

(60,099 posts)labeled synthetic content. But YouTube leaves it up to the video creator to add that label, and of course a lot of these fraudsters don't.
There are already countless YouTube deepfake channels, victimizing lots of different celebrities including famous journalists. The people being victimized could spend a fortune using lawyers to try to locate them all and shut them.down.
YouTube should be held legally accountable, and so should the AI companies whose tools enable and encourage the deepfakes. They know very well how much harm they're doing.

(20,255 posts)Replete with garish colour scheme, sensational headlines and an AI Rachel with the voice not quite right. This is right at the bottom of the "About...." section. "Disclaimer: This video is for educational and news commentary purposes."

(1 post)After checking the "small print" in the "more..." section, I find no mention of "A-I" or the previously popular "created for educational and entertainment purposes" statements. How are we supposed to know what is FAKE? WHY DOES YouTube ALLOW THIS, "OBVIOUSLY FAKE" REPORTING TO FLOURISH IN IT'S FORUM? With "AUTHORITIES" readily available, such as Maddow, Kinzinger and Will, who are on the news regularly, why can't YouTube VERIFY AUTHENTICITY IMMEDIATELY? ISN'T THIS BLATANT FRAUD AND ISN'T YouTube BEING COMPLACENT?
I would jump at the opportunity to listen to discussions of these topics, BY THE AUTHORITIES ADVERTISED...NOT, a picture of each and a computer generated analysis of the situation! THAT IS NOT TOO MUCH TO ASK!!!

They have successfully fought off/bought off regulation using a free speech argument, despite the fact that print and broadcast media are responsible for what they publish.

(115,122 posts)There are many fakes taking over much of the Internet. If Congress was on the ball, they would pass legislation immediately to try and control this mis-use of information.
Not only have I seen fake Rachel reports, I have seen fake Nicolle Wallace, Glenn Kirschner, Bryan Tyler Cohen, George Will, and even, Donald Trump.
The legislation should require that they be clearly labeled or face fines or imprisonment. In my opinion, it is that important of an issue.

(23,069 posts)Is if the majority of fake AIs was about the Gropenfuhrer saying things that would piss voters off. I raped over
20 ten year olds and killed their babies. Here's my plan to take over the world, blah blah blah. I'm now
President for life and I'm dismantling Congress because I'm smarter than all of them. etc, etc, etc

(1,945 posts)It takes a minute or two to see the reader does not move much if you aren't expecting/looking for an AI reader.
The voice is pretty good, and even the story was plausible, but there are no other sources claiming such a document auction for 2 million dollars in Dubai. Lots of supposed details a very believable something that could happen.
At least this channel had a buried disclaimer that it was an AI generated image. But Yt keeps serving me AI generated slop, or channels where they just clip and repackage parts of other creators videos.
But it is getting harder to wade through all of the purposeful disinformation slop on top of the lies and conspiracy theories of the RFK jr. and Qanon types.

(1 post)The hand movement is really a key give away. I think that and the fact your brain knows how Rachel sounds or you can debunk AI better than most due to exposure or that its hitting you off just a bit consistently enough to raise the alarm. I noticed the hands as well and after running a few scenarios I still had question so I am you had asked before I wouldve been able. It makes me think about the way we have all have been unable to figure out what brain damage has been responsible for the MAGA mind. How could they even begin to come to that conclusion? I always knew it were possible to weaponize AI on a mass scale. I can imagine a president having that technology come across the briefing and it not be put to use in every evil villain way you can think of. If you are picking up what Im putting down lets talk a bit about it

For those still interested in this, the "Maddow's Brief" YouTube channel was removed from YouTube yesterday. It was a fake AI channel.

(175,078 posts)We have noticed over the years that The Rachel Maddow Show has been on the air that some of the things Rachel says on TV, at outside speaking engagements, or online can take on a life of their own on the internet. And sometimes things she never actually said take on a life of their own as well.
To set some of the record straight, here are a few of the more common ones to cross our radar. If you have a question about whether a quote or event is really Rachel, write to the show on BlueSky at @MaddowBlog.bsky.social and well hunt it down (and maybe even add it to this page!).
What is the deal with these YouTube accounts full of fake A.I. of Rachel Maddows voice talking about Russia and Ukraine (mostly)? We have no idea, but they spring up like mushrooms as quickly as YouTube takes them down. They dont seem to be malicious toward Rachel, which would seem to point to them having either propaganda value or just a spam-money ploy. Its not even clear if theyre part of a single campaign or multiple operators. Some of them try to evade intellectual property rules by adding a disclaimer somewhere that explains that its not really Rachel, but that doesnt make it any less confusing for most people who run into them. The good news is that all of the real Rachel Maddow YouTube video that comes from us is under the MS NOW umbrella account.
