Stephen Miller Asserts U.S. Has Right to Take Greenland
In a CNN interview, the Trump aide also echoed the president’s intent to run Venezuela as he laid out a case for the United States to control weaker states by flexing its military might.

Stephen Miller, a top aide to President Trump, asserted on Monday that Greenland rightfully belonged to the United States and that the Trump administration could seize the semiautonomous Danish territory if it wanted.

“Nobody’s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland,” Mr. Miller told Jake Tapper, the CNN host, after being asked repeatedly whether he would rule out using military force.

The remarks were part of a vocal push by Mr. Miller, long a powerful behind-the-scenes player in Trump administration policy, to justify American imperialism and a vision for a new world order in which the United States could freely overthrow national governments and take foreign territory and resources so long as it was in the national interest.

“We live in a world, in the real world, Jake, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power,” he said. “These are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of time.”

Tue Jan 6, 2026, 07:59 PM
Jan 2026

For all the talk about the Monroe Doctrine, we really ought to discuss a different 19th century concept: Manifest Destiny.

For all of the recent White House talk about the Monroe Doctrine, a different 19th-century concept — Manifest Destiny — should be part of the same conversation.

Instead of eying US expansion to the Pacific, Team Trump apparently believes we’re destined to control the entire hemisphere.

The Republican added that there was a “good possibility that we could do it without military force,” but he went on to say that he wasn’t going to “take anything off the table.”

Almost a year later, the administration continues to insist on its radical vision. The New York Times reported:

Stephen Miller, a top aide to President Trump, asserted on Monday that Greenland rightfully belonged to the United States and that the Trump administration could seize the semiautonomous Danish territory if it wanted.

‘Nobody’s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland,’ Mr. Miller told Jake Tapper, the CNN host, after being asked repeatedly whether he would rule out using military force
.

According to CNN’s transcript, the full context of Miller’s quote was, “The United States should have Greenland as part of the United States. There’s no need to even think or talk about this in the context that you’re asking, of a military operation. Nobody’s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland.”.....

The day before Miller’s on-air comments, the president emphasized his belief that the U.S. needs to acquire Greenland “from a national security situation,” and the day after Miller’s appearance, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, the White House’s odd choice for a special envoy to Greenland, appeared on CNBC and refused to rule out the possibility of a U.S. takeover of the Arctic island.

QUICK: You're talking about doing business. Is this us just going to Greenland and doing deals with them, or is this us taking it over?

JEFF LANDRY: The president is one of those people that says everything is on the table

Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2026-01-06T14:28:57.480Z

......For all of the recent White House talk about the Monroe Doctrine, it seems that a different 19th century concept — Manifest Destiny — deserves to be part of the same conversation. But instead of advocating the expansion of the United States to the Pacific Ocean, Team Trump appears to be operating under the assumption that we’re destined to control the entire hemisphere.

Our longtime allies appear unimpressed. The U.S. faced a rare rebuke at an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Monday. A day later, major European allies warned the United States that they would “not stop defending” the values of sovereignty and territorial integrity, in direct response to the White House threats against Greenland.

If Team Trump’s goal was to further isolate the United States for no reason, it’s succeeding beautifully.

Where exactly does the president intend to get the money to buy a massive arctic island that isn’t for sale?

Mike Johnson: Rubio was kidding about Trump wanting to buy Greenland.

Rubio: No, I wasn’t. www.ms.now/rachel-maddo...

Steve Benen (@stevebenen.com) 2026-01-07T19:59:04.538Z

https://www.ms.now/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/team-trump-confirms-the-administration-wants-to-buy-greenland

The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times reported, and MS NOW confirmed, that Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers in a classified briefing this week that the White House is less interested in military action and more interested in trying to buy Greenland — which, by all accounts, is not currently for sale.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson brushed off the idea, telling reporters that Rubio might’ve made the comment “in jest.” The Louisiana Republican repeated the line Wednesday morning, explaining at a Capitol Hill press conference that he thinks he remembers hearing the secretary of state talk about a possible Greenland purchase, but the GOP leader said he “took it as a joke.”

Readers, it was not a joke.

Q: Does the US intend to buy Greenland?

MARCO RUBIO: That's always been the president's intent

Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2026-01-07T16:31:55.422Z

Asked to clarify comments he made to lawmakers behind closed doors on Monday, Rubio told reporters late Wednesday morning that it’s “always” been Trump’s “intent” to try to buy Greenland.

Less than an hour later, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said largely the same thing, explaining during a briefing that the president is “actively” discussing the purchase of Greenland.

Leavitt says Trump is "actively" discussing buying Greenland

Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2026-01-07T17:10:56.139Z

As policy priorities go, all of this seems plainly ridiculous. And yet it also raises a host of new and related questions: Where exactly does Trump intend to get the money to buy a massive arctic island that isn’t for sale? Is he going to ask Congress to appropriate the funds? Would GOP lawmakers be willing to write an enormous check?

And how embarrassed is the House speaker right now after his “took it as a joke” line has been publicly discredited by his ostensible allies?

I was also wondering how trump will get Congress to give him the funds to buy Greenland.
