Unfortunately, neither do Democrats.
Rep Doug LaMalfa passed away.
Rep Greene resigned
Rep Jim Baird (80 yrs old) was hospitalized this morning after a serious car accident.
The first two officially take the Republicans down to 217.
If Baird doesn't come back it takes them to 216.
So a lot will ride on the outcome of the seats held by Greene and LaMalfa. I actually hope that Newsome drags his feet on setting up a special election for LaMalfa's seat.
This new spin on things should make the House even more toxic from Republicans.

(12,115 posts)It's in the constitution.
If Newsom did try to appoint, then the GOP Speaker wouldn't allow that person to be sworn in.
Newsom's best bet is to delay the special election for as long as possible.

(38,113 posts)The Constitution which allowed an ICE Agent to shoot a woman in the face in her car in Minneapolis this morning?
That Constitution? The one that is now defunct?

Its one thing to legally respond to the TX redistricting with a voter-supported plan.
It is quite another to leave voters without representation.

(3,536 posts)That would be a historic reversal. Possible, but I'm not holding my breath. Plenty of other pick-up options this November.

(2,096 posts)It will likely be a Democratic seat with the redistricting. But the special election will be with the current lines.
Bluetus
(3,090 posts)and the GOP may not field much of a candidate if it looks like the seat will be lost in November anyway.
All of these shit is so anti-democratic, but we have to fight fire with fire. The racist party (whatever name the party went by at the time) has been doing this shit for 200 years.
It is a shame that we were so close to being able to pass comprehensive election reform in 2021, but it failed thanks to Manchin.

(12,516 posts)In November, voters passed Proposition 50, which redrew Californias congressional lines to shore up Democratic districts starting with the November 2026 midterm cycle. Under that initiative, LaMalfas district was shifted south to include more liberal Bay Area residents, starting in the November 2026 midterms.
LaMalfa represented the states 1st congressional district, which spans much of the north state up to the Oregon border, a reliably conservative and mostly rural agrarian area.
Under state law, because the district representative vacated before those new lines went into effect, the successor will be elected to represent the current district, according to redistricting expert Paul Mitchell.
A handful of candidates have declared their intention to run for the new district, like previous LaMalfa opponent Audrey Denney and Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg. In addition to the special primary election for LaMalfas successor, another election will take place for someone to represent the newly drawn 1st District, which will include voters from more liberal leaning Sonoma and Napa counties, Mitchell said.

(300 posts)The Republicans started the new year with 220. They lost MTG yesterday and the California congressman passing away today makes it 218. The car crash makes it 217, I assume temporarily. The DEMS are at 213. Which means lil mike can only lose 1 vote from his caucus. More importantly, Johnson needs 218 to bring a vote to the floor, which means he needs one dem. This will be interesting to see how the house proceeds over the next few days/weeks.
Wiz Imp
(10,437 posts)That's incorrect. That only applies to discharge petitions. The Speaker can bring any bill he wants to the floor whenever he wants. It just needs to pass in committe first.

(10,437 posts)Democrats have 213. That will go up to 214 after January 31 when the runoff for Sylvester turner's seat in Texas takes place. Bothe candidates in the runoff are Democrats. Mikie Sherrill's seat in NJ will have a special election in April, almost cdertainly to be won by a Democrat. I think the special election for Greene's seat in Georgia will take place first, though, even though it hasn't been scheduled yet. The special election for the California vacancy must take place by June at the latest.
