President Donald Trump says the U.S. needs Greenland for national security, ostensibly to counter Russia and China. But Trumps interest in the sparsely populated island appears to be as much about hemispheric dominance as homeland defense.
According to two people familiar with private high-level discussions and granted anonymity to share their details, the White House has shown little interest in an overture last year from Denmarks prime minister offering the U.S. the option to increase its military presence in Greenland, where it already operates a base and has long deployed troops at liberty.
The option of more U.S. military presence has been on the table, said one of the people, a European defense official. The White House is not interested.
The second person, an American in frequent contact with the administration and European officials, said that most of what Trump says he wants out of Greenland access to investment resources like critical minerals, more troops and military bases, better intelligence sharing could be easily accomplished by negotiating directly with Denmark, a steadfast ally.

(107,459 posts)I'd say Trump needs to purge Alex Jones, Tucker Carlson, Benny Johnson, Ben Shapiro et al from his system, but there is so much of it in his system that it's not possible.

(5,619 posts)Let's remember that Trump has little use for agreements, treaties, or deals that he did not "negotiate" himself: Instead of tweaking NAFTA, he had to discard it completely and come up with the "US, Canada & Mexico Trade Agreement." He conjured up "Space Force" when neither the US Air Force nor NASA was considered sufficient. Then there's the narcissistic re-naming of buildings after himself..

On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson brushed off the idea, telling reporters that Rubio mightve made the comment in jest. The Louisiana Republican repeated the line Wednesday morning, explaining at a Capitol Hill press conference that he thinks he remembers hearing the secretary of state talk about a possible Greenland purchase, but the GOP leader said he took it as a joke.
Readers, it was not a joke.
Q: Does the US intend to buy Greenland?

MARCO RUBIO: That's always been the president's intent
Asked to clarify comments he made to lawmakers behind closed doors on Monday, Rubio told reporters late Wednesday morning that its always been Trumps intent to try to buy Greenland.
Less than an hour later, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said largely the same thing, explaining during a briefing that the president is actively discussing the purchase of Greenland.
Leavitt says Trump is "actively" discussing buying Greenland

As policy priorities go, all of this seems plainly ridiculous. And yet it also raises a host of new and related questions: Where exactly does Trump intend to get the money to buy a massive arctic island that isnt for sale? Is he going to ask Congress to appropriate the funds? Would GOP lawmakers be willing to write an enormous check?
And how embarrassed is the House speaker right now after his took it as a joke line has been publicly discredited by his ostensible allies?
I was also wondering how trump will get Congress to give him the funds to buy Greenland.
