(Guardian) European leaders have dramatically rallied together in support of Denmark and Greenland after one of Donald Trumps leading aides suggested the US may be willing to seize control of the Arctic territory by force.
Keir Starmer, the UK prime minister, Emmanuel Macron, the French president, and Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, declared that Greenland a semi-autonomous territory of the kingdom of Denmark belongs to its people, in a rare European rebuke to the White House.
It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland, the three leaders said in a statement on Tuesday made jointly with the prime ministers of Denmark, Italy, Poland and Spain.
Later in the evening, Starmer repeated British support for Denmark at a press conference in Paris where Trumps special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were present. Ive been very clear as to what my position, the position of the UK government is, the British leader said. .....................(more)

(8,707 posts)Not a joke, not trolling, not a distraction. He has already made up his mind and nobody who matters in the inner circle will try to talk him out of it. Some of them want it precisely because it will destroy NATO. There are no adults in the room. They really mean to do it.
They intend it to be a bloodless fait accompli, too. Which is entirely plausible. We have a base there, and military use of other airports. Not like it would take a huge force. Build up a few thousand troops in-country and then one day Trump just proclaims it. That's their plan, such as it is.
Nuuk is hardly a big city, and it's the biggest one they've got. This is it. They'll just seize the airport and roll a few APCs up the street to the government buildings and then "we're in charge now!" It would make the Argentine invasion of the Falklands look like a pitched battle.
I don't think they pull that off with *zero* resistance. Somebody will take some shots. Random civilians. Maybe some cops or the scant Danish presence. But there are only 57k people on the whole island, 20k in the capital. They think they'll get away with it in part b/c it won't look like a "war."
Denmark needed to be having serious conversations in Europe about arranging a European tripwire force there until 2029 in February when this shit started. To be fair, I get the Danes being dumbfounded by the total insanity of the situation and not wanting to... "escalate" feels absurd, but provoke, I guess. But that ship has sailed. Either you put up some kind of fight or not but that decision needs to be made right now.

(42,901 posts)The EU has warned him. He'll test them to see if they back it up with force. He's sneaky enough to use the Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in northwest Greenland that the U.S. established under a 1951 defense treaty with Denmark, for some hit and run military action. Disprespecting Denmark and the EU won't go well for him or us in general.
