"The invasion talk is probably Trumpian bluster to prod a negotiation to buy the island or end up with some other expanded U.S. presence. But even the suggestion of force is damaging Americas interests across the Atlantic," the board lamented.
A major problem, according to the editorial, is that the Trump White House, including presidential adviser Stephen Miller, refused to rule out military action, crossing a dangerous line. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen made it clear that if the United States attacked a NATO ally militarily, "everything will come to an end." That includes NATO itself.
To boot, it would give Putin a big win on a silver platter.
"But feuding with friends over Greenland is giving Vladimir Putin another wedge to divide America from Europe to his benefit. That means less U.S. leverage for driving a good and durable Ukraine settlement," the board warned.

(7,229 posts)The Europeans have. Not been standing still. They know the US under Trump/Vance has gone rogue and that we have lost control of our government for now.
This administration has fallen totally for the Russian vision of sidelining the UN and dividing the world into 3 superpower spheres of exploitation. Russia, the US and China can grab whatever they want in their territory. Trump and Vance pretty much said this when they roasted Zelensky at the White House. The message was : Your small, Russia is big. Might makes right. You have no cards. But they were wrong.
As for Greenland, billionaires or oligarchs can possibly afford to buy it. The population is small. There could be an offer to tempt the Greenlanders. That is why the Europeans are emphasizing that Denmark is also a decider.
Time is of the essence though because Russia is faltering. And China sees an opening in Siberia as Russia sputters.
I believe Trump still worships Putin. Putin has been advising him foe over a decade and much of what he has told him would come about has happened.
That 50 million barrels of oil Venezuela has supposedly promised to Trump and which Trump claims he will be in charge of selling on the world market-is Trump thinking he can divert some to Russia?
I dont know but I do not think that the US kidnapping of Meduro without Trump getting the greenlight from Putin.
