President Donald Trump has once again ramped up his threats to acquire the territory of Greenland from Denmark, not even ruling out potential military occupation of the island. But at least for now, key Republican figures don't appear to be willing to back him on this.
U.S. interest in acquiring Greenland, which is both vital for strategic military purposes and rich in national resources, has existed in various forms since the 19th century. But since the NATO alliance was founded, Denmark has allowed the U.S. military access to the island, which largely tamped down debate in America about acquiring it outright. Trump, a longtime NATO skeptic, has repeatedly pushed to reopen that door, something Denmark and a majority of Greenlanders themselves vehemently oppose.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said, No, I dont think thats appropriate, in response to questioning about whether Trump could militarily invade Greenland, according to Politico.

(100 posts)Whenever Republicans stand up we must give them our supports and thank them. It's positive reinforcement, if they are supported strongly for doing it they will be more likely to stand up more. We should also even more thank the Democrats for standing up bravely even when Republicans act like cowards. I know no one is perfect but let's celebrate when someone does something good.

He wants Greenland to dominate the headlines, not the Venezuela transition. He wants Europe dragged into an emotional, reactive loop so that, weeks later, you are still stuck on Greenland while he gets a free run on Venezuela. (my emphasis)

The more you respond, the more incentive he has to stay on the line. The moment the responses stop, the line dies. This is not avoidance. It is containment.
He does not have a path to invade Greenland. The last 24 hours have already incentivized him to probe for division between Denmark and Greenland expect strategic leaks and planted narratives aimed at stirring friction. But this is all part of an elaborate bluff.
Oh yeah. What else could he possibly want to distract from besides what's happening on the ground in Venezuela? The Epstein files. Jack Smith's testimony. Easy to see why our NATO allies are freaking out, but what if it's all entertainment for Trump that also meets his need to distract?
The whole article is worth a read. He's a newly discovered gem for me.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson brushed off the idea, telling reporters that Rubio mightve made the comment in jest. The Louisiana Republican repeated the line Wednesday morning, explaining at a Capitol Hill press conference that he thinks he remembers hearing the secretary of state talk about a possible Greenland purchase, but the GOP leader said he took it as a joke.
Readers, it was not a joke.

MARCO RUBIO: That's always been the president's intent
Asked to clarify comments he made to lawmakers behind closed doors on Monday, Rubio told reporters late Wednesday morning that its always been Trumps intent to try to buy Greenland.
Less than an hour later, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said largely the same thing, explaining during a briefing that the president is actively discussing the purchase of Greenland.
Leavitt says Trump is "actively" discussing buying Greenland

As policy priorities go, all of this seems plainly ridiculous. And yet it also raises a host of new and related questions: Where exactly does Trump intend to get the money to buy a massive arctic island that isnt for sale? Is he going to ask Congress to appropriate the funds? Would GOP lawmakers be willing to write an enormous check?
And how embarrassed is the House speaker right now after his took it as a joke line has been publicly discredited by his ostensible allies?
I was also wondering how trump will get Congress to give him the funds to buy Greenland.
