Democratic strategists are advising 2026 Democratic candidates not to focus on Donald Trump, Venezuela, or even the mighty Epstein files. They say the key to winning the midterms is to point out that the Republicans have failed to do anything about affordability and to explain what they will do to make life better for people. James Carville was right: "It's [still] the economy, stupid." If Democrats can make a case on how they will make the economy better, that will be the key to winning, the strategists say.
It isn't like talking about Trump is taboo. It is fine if it fits in with affordability. For example, blaming Trump's tariffs for the high price of everything is fine. One tool the Democrats can then talk about using is having Congress take back the power to levy tariffs and use them only in a highly targeted way. For example, a high tariff on Chinese solar panels combined with a subsidy for American-made solar panels could be a way for people to reduce their electricity costs (by generating their own power), while also creating manufacturing jobs. Another good topic would be health care costs and how Republican policies (such as blocking subsidies) have made them go through the roof.

(10,357 posts)We are in a post truth world where many people worry about self-interest and self-promotion above everything else and truth is whatever you want it to be. For many, alternative facts are just as valid as conspiracy theories.
In other words - cruelty, democracy, and corruption are important but for many not enough to get people to take the time to vote - it is all about can I afford things....whatever they might be....food, gas, healthcare, childcare, insurance, etc.

(10,357 posts)that affect others...until it affects them personally - and then it's thoughts and prayers. Also these types of issues have more disinformation surrounding them to the point where it becomes debatable - ex. good guy with a gun, it's not the gun..it's the person and even if we do everything right on climate change it won't matter because we can not control the China...
The real truth is that as a collective we can actually choose the kind of society we live in, at least for now, but those in power know that dividing us keeps them in power and the vast economic interests have the ability to sway public opinion.

(78,650 posts)I posted a link to an article that told about "top" Democrats meeting with strategists. They agreed the party needed to have a more corporate-friendly approach, to isolate AOC and Bernie, and to have candidatesappear at gun shows. I mean, Michael Dukakis pictured in the tank was such a brilliant move, though not so powerful as bringing Dick Cheney on stage to endorse VP Harris. Surely we picked up the support of the war criminals' base.

(48,763 posts)I feel like we are adrift in a vast ocean with nothing , no one in sight.
Yesterday was difficult. The brutal murder of a lady who could have been my daughter, niece, or cousin knocked the wind out of me. I'm already dealing with two serious illnesses in my family. I needed to get away from my thoughts. Alone in a crowd sounded like the best option. But out of that crowd came my sister's 9-year old grandson, who had previously seemed a tad afraid of this old ancestor from a safe distance. Three different times he came over, without saying a word, and hugged me.
Since those hugs, I've been focusing my thinking on what needs to be done to repair this broken country for that little boy's generation. I have an idea -- perhaps as crazy as the boy had previously assumed (correctly) that I am -- that I am trying to organize into an outline in my mind, to post here on DU.

(844 posts)whatever the message, it has to be able to be delivered in clear concise messages that stick like viral memes.
And of course, the voters have to be addressed according to specific needs and questions they actually care about.
And as much as I like defending various communities, "We'll bring back your rights." is a better political message than targeted ones that stupidly trouble certain groups. Or just trouble stupid ignorant people, IMO.

(2,752 posts)How quaint. You ARE old!
I joke, I joke.
But -- yeah, Congress has slowly lost all of its foreign policy power over the last 70 years or so.
Mobilize voters by discussing the nuances of getting variances to obtain rare earth mineral rights. Because voters have demonstrated an inexhaustible appetite for Democrats with detailed policy proposals.
