I held my tongue until today, just to be sure but it's become crystal clear that the majority of the country supports this.
How do I know that?
Because they shot a white woman in the face, multiple times, at point blank range in broad daylight in front of dozens of witnesses and on camera and absolutely nothing happened.
Minor protest here and there but mostly nothing today
The mayor and governor have fallen back on the rethoric of arresting protestors that even slightly step out of line.
All while the murderer of Renee Good carries on like it's a normal day.
People have become wholly disengaged and don't care as long as it doesn't happen to them.
I am speaking in general here. Yes, there have been protests. Yes, some political people are getting in front of cameras and saying a lot of words to appease people but no actual actions to change anything.
It's just Kuboki Theater.
There are literally millions of people across the country and this full on declaration of war on us citizens is being met with maybe a couple thousand.
Don't get fooled, that is EXACTLY how this administration is seeing this right now and it is absolutely signalling to these gestapo thugs that the small amount of protestors that are out are free game to treat anyway they want.

Protests alone are great in my opinion to bring like minded people together. But they don't accomplish anything more than that in reality. They aren't going to sway public opinion. Without Democrats being willing to stand up, dig in their heels and say "NO" and mean it, I don't know that I hold out much hope any more.

I found this on the History channel website:
Aftermath of the Kent State Shooting
Following the shooting, the university was immediately ordered closed, and the campus remained shut down for some six weeks following the shootings.
Numerous investigatory commissions and court trials followed, during which members of the Ohio National Guard testified that they felt the need to discharge their weapons because they feared for their lives.
However, disagreements remain as to whether they were, in fact, under sufficient threat to use force.
In a civil suit filed by the injured Kent State students and their families, a settlement was reached in 1979 in which the Ohio National Guard agreed to pay those injured in the events of May 4, 1970 a total of $675,000.
https://www.history.com/articles/kent-state-shooting
I dont recall hearing of massive protests in reaction to the students being killed, but it did change the way the National Guard is utilized in the United States. It changed because again - they screwed up and killed some white people that time.

(60,790 posts)The reaction in Bloomington was shock and fear. Our campus had a large meadow in the center. Most of us walked through it to get to buildings where we had classes. For months, it was also the site of protests. Before Kent State, it was a very pretty, laid back scene. The idea of anyone being attacked was far from our mind.
So many kids were afraid to leave their dorms that the university organized a candlelight memorial.
However, it was shocking hearing that many adults followed the Nixon administration's view that the kids provoked the guard.

Lastly, the state is investigating the murder of Renee Good. They have a website where citizens can provide evidence.

They are arresting protestors for being to loud. I would also note that if protesting doesn't make people uncomfortable, it isn't protesting. They are, very literally, torturing and murdering people with impunity but let's arrest the boisterous protestors?
Lastly, they aren't investigating shit. They have been cut out of the investigation by the government. They have no access to any formal evidence in the case. Any case they form would be based on here say at best and could never be brought to court.

(129,150 posts)and people aren't just engaged, they are enraged! People are getting involved who weren't involved in the George Floyd protests. Our neighbors are being kidnapped from their jobs and stores and right off the streets - sometimes just leaving their cars in the middle of the street. Restaurants have had to close because their staff is afraid to come to work. A high school was invaded on Wednesday, and now the schools are closed and having to offer on-line teaching. Yesterday's rally was huge, especially considering it was created on only two days' notice, unlike the No Kings rallies, and it was very cold - yet some ten thousand people showed up. I've never seen a more engaged community. This isn't going to stop or shrink.

Just today I picked up 2 car loads of donated food to help feed my community. Does it solve all hunger? Nope, but it helps someone today. Tomorrow I'm helping coach a Special Olympics class. Are those athletes going to be challenging Simone Biles? No, but they are going to be getting exercise, being part of a community, getting a little bit better as athletes.
We aren't going to be rid either of Trump (unless he finally has that heart attack he's overdue for), or the other people who support him (and similar movements in Brazil, France, Italy, the UK, Hungary, etc) tomorrow no matter what happens. Politics is slow. The legal system is slow. It sucks that it benefits people like Trump. But Hitler and Napoleon and Mussolini all fell too. So will Trump.

(85 posts)Your comments are spot on. The single most important measure of the success of our collective efforts are the results at the ballot box. The nationwide protests that began early last year have translated into huge support for Democratic candidates in elections all across the country.
Democrats have won elections in deep red districts, something that would have been unheard of in 2024. Recent polling continues to show that more than 60% of the country opposes what Trump and this administration is doing.
Yes, we will prevail but we need to stay in the fight and not allow cynicism and negativity to sap our energy.

And all of this the consequence of the apathy and indifference of the American people the majority of whom either support the fascist Trump regime or shrug off Trumps crimes and abuse of power because they believe theres nothing they can do about it.
The ultimate blame belongs to the Founding Generation and their unwarranted fear of the people; the fear that the people with direct access to the levers of governance posed a threat to the powerful elite, denying the people the means by which to remove tyrants like Trump from power.

(737 posts)I think it is quite the opposite.
Why are the ICE thugs so angry that would shoot an innocent American for pretty much doing nothing? Because they KNOW they've lost the public.
Heck, the reason she was out there is because people all over the country are standing up to the ICE thugs.
If they were actually winning there would be no resistance. The fact that such mild resistance gets them angry enough to KILL tells us how much we are actually winning.
And if you think these kinds of things do not affect public opinion I believe you are mistaken.
Both the senseless killing and the outright lies and coverup of the Administration break through to people.
Not only allowing but seeming to encourage the killing of innocent people in our country will turn a blue wave into a blue tsunami--not only at the ballot box in November for federal elections, but in state and local elections all over the country.
I know it is easy to be cynical, but every election stands on its own. We have an electorate that is not required to vote, and as such we never know who is going to show up. Things like this may not motivate everyone to get out and protest, but it will motivate a hell of a lot of people to vote...against this.

My point is that they have declared war on us and we are still admonishing people to be kind and polite and not raise their voices, all while they are beating us will clubs and choking us with chemical gas.
