(129,678 posts)Many of them had assisted the CIA in operations in Laos. There haven't been many new refugees since 2001 when the Patriot Act clamped down on immigration, and, like the Somalis, a lot of the Hmong people in MN are American-born. I assume the latest ICE siege is to arrest and deport the (now) old people who arrived in the '70s.

(12,793 posts)The Immigrant Law Center suggests the following if federal immigration agents come to your home.
Remember:
ICE needs a judge-signed warrant with your name and address to enter.
You can ask them to show you the warrant through the window or under the door.
If there is no valid warrant, you have the right to keep your door closed.
It's in what I'll call poster form -- a good one to put on one's door

(9,419 posts)A city whose whole identity springs from the Old South and Lost Cause mythology. The occupation won't ever be here because the populace clamored for Trump, holding a pair of stadium-sized events for him.

(4,606 posts)but I do have a loaded shotgun close at hand in case I hear anyone breaking my door down....
(not that they would have any reason to come after me, an old white man,
unless they got wind of something I had posted on the internets!)

(10,571 posts)I get the hairy eyeball all the time for doing the same thing.
I was born and raised in the deep country. There was no help coming (except maybe neighbors, if they were close enough, able to get there soon enough, and all were on good terms.).
Based on what I am seeing... there is no help coming.
So... either do something or do nothing.

(27,276 posts)They don't care if it's illegal. the Trump administration is all about dragging out court cases, and immigrants don't have the resources to fight them in court.

(4,510 posts)The link above has resources for ordering or printing "red cards," small cards (typically printed on red card stock) which lists your constitutional rights when being confronted by ICE or law enforcement.
I try to hand out several at every protest or rally I go to. Usually 75 to 80 percent of people I give them to have never heard of them. I'm hoping to make a dent in that percentage over time.

(52,758 posts)They busted down dozens of doors in that Chicago apt building without showing a warrant.
Colmenares said he didnt open the door to his apartment because he had seen on the news that agents were supposed to have warrants. Naudelys Yayes said that, as she and her 4-year-old son were taken out of another unit, she asked an agent if they were allowed to enter without a warrant. He told her they had a warrant because in this building theres a lot of weapons, but he never showed it to her.
Immigration authorities can also use so-called administrative warrants, which do not allow a forced entry. Residents must give permission for officers to enter their apartment.
