Owen Mason Hill
Actress Amy Landecker lambasted hypocrite Bill Maher for using her husband, Bradley Whitford, as a liberal punching bag.
If Bill Maher wants to come after my fricking husband one more time and complain about the fact that people who are known are having an opinion. Who is he? What is he famous for? Just being known and having an opinion? Landecker, 56, said with Whitford by her side on Obsessed: The Podcast. And then coming after him and going, Oh, youre the worst kind of liberal. Well, to me, hes the worst kind of hypocrite.
...
First of all, why are you so grumpy? You are literally the most angry stoner Ive ever met in my entire life, Landecker said. Plus, your show has never been bigger, so shut up about being canceled.
He is worried about cancel culture on this, his 35th year of hosting a show, Whitford agreed. Hes a comedian talking about politics, and he doesnt want anyone else to express an opinion!

(6,815 posts)so I asked her why she kept watching him. She had no reply. Some people just purposely watch garbage so they can complain about the garbage creator.

(7,728 posts)Maher was so two-faced he might as well NOT have had an opinion. Just puts his finger up into the wind to see which way it's blowing and let his mouth open up. I quit watching him and have never gone back since.

Yet he seems to still have fans at DU

Sympthsical
(10,939 posts)The people who hate him talk about him obsessively (see: Well, here). The people who enjoy his show note it and move on.
And the Daily Beast knows this and uses it to ragebait their audience into engagement.
It's amusing how easy it is, and how well it works in their ecosystem.
Ilikepurple
(586 posts)Unsubstantiated fact learned today. People who do not like Maher are obsessives who are easily drawn to rage by simple tactics while people who do like Maher simply and reasonably note that they like his style and focus (and obsessively defend him whenever negative posts come up about him). It seems the strongest argument for certain positions tends to be that others are ridiculous, obsessive, naive, hysterical, or delusional. It pains me to see some of the seemingly brightest and most informed members feel the need to dismiss others opinions as being rooted in their mentally defective, infantile, or perhaps even feminine natures. It just seems that if one is arguing from a strong position, they would have a ready made argument that doesnt rely on diminishing others rather than their statements or arguments.
Sympthsical
(10,939 posts)I've long noted I sometimes agree with the guy, sometimes don't. Sometimes I watch, sometimes not. More often not, because I'm just kind of crazy busy these days.
But he's discussed ad nauseam, often several times a week, where every Daily Beast article that mentions him gets dragged around.
It's the Howard Stern effect. And the Daily Beast, which relies on clicks and eyeballs, would be dumb not to take advantage of an audience that will leap on that kind of content.
What on earth is this sentence? That is a weird attack on posters here. I certainly never said anything close to such a thing - but you just have.
Those are unfortunate thoughts to harbor, and I don't think anyone would appreciate the people here being categorized or thought of as such.

(29,594 posts)I can't remember ever liking him, but way back when his show was new he had her on a lot and treated her like a legitimate pundit.
We got subscription tickets one year to a series that included people like Molly Ivins, Al Franken, and Michael Moore. Unfortunately, one of the shows was Bill Maher. We went and it was just an f-bomb laden sexist diatribe full of dirty jokes. It was puerile. The only people laughing were two boys a few rows ahead of us who looked about 13, so that should tell you the level of humor and who the target audience was.

(13,230 posts)Gave us her password about a year ago to watch a show, with ads, so every once in awhile if Bill has someone on I am curious about I watch.
Hard to believe how much he has changed. I have watched him since ABC. I think he got super lonely during covid because he couldn't meet with his friends to party. That and the solar permits taking years.
If I had to guess about Trump he is kissing up a bit not to lose his show because that's all he has now. He is afraid he will get what Colbert did. He used to stand up to Trump but now he is scared.
Really too bad because it used to be a good show.

(9,467 posts)I began to notice the pet peeves he inevitably circled back to again and again and again. It became tiresome, then predictable.
Then there were his logical fallacies, and the gaps in his reasoning. It became more and more obvious he wasn't very good at questioning himself or his stances to make sure those positions were sound or defensible. He would rely on woo or poor information, then topped it off with the belief he was smarter than he actually was.
He doesn't listen well and seems to only seek to opine.

(9,467 posts)We're all dismayed by developments in the world as we age, but the wise learn to pick their battles. Maher just seems to want to lash out.
And some of those he falls prostrate to are the worst of a cohort leading the world into perilous waters.

We would laugh our asses off when bill trashed the right-wing stupid asses.
Not sure when....but slowly...Bill would start to have the same right-wing asses, on his show..
Then going more R-I-G-H-T and more ..and more....
About a year and a half ago..we said "Alright..WTF ?? has happened?
We quit entirely. Thanks Bill for screwing up a decent funny show.

(41,201 posts)And there were so many great actors on West Wing that it was hard to have a favorite. But I always looked forward to seeing him on that show. It's just one more reason to be totally disgusted with Bill Maher.
Anyone who justifies his both-siderisms by saying "Well I'm just a libertarian anyway" - and Maher says that a lot - is a disgusting asshole in my book. I'm glad Amy Landecker told him off, he deserves it.

(38,136 posts)...who's at fault: the comedian or the audience?
With older comedians like Maher and a few others, THEY always blame the audience when something falls flat.
Is a comedian who can't read the room still a comedian?

(76 posts)I was at the grand opening of the House of Blues in Chicago in 1996 and he literally groped my girlfriend right in front of me, from her frontside like a Trump move. Well I shoved him off and he fell down and his entourage rushed and tackled me. My girlfriend and I got kicked out. It was my 30th birthday. Never went back to HOB and never gave Maher a nano-second of thought, other than to scratch my head that he has enough viewers to stay on the air.

(1,475 posts)...who closeted away his Liberatarian kookism in favor of being something more socially acceptable, and so declared himself to be a "liberal". He's always been full of shit, but has had enough talented writers around him to make him seem funny. He's never met a right-winger he wasn't willing to publicly give verbal fellatio on his show. If Maher does anything of value, he's the modern petri dish of the rich white man who holds passive-aggressive views on equality and democracy, just like our founders.
He's a dick.
