1. Both the Kurds and the Iraqi government told him it wasn't going to happen

So he's acting like he has decided against it.

This is making a virtue of necessity on steroids. Whenever somebody tells Trump "No," he reinterprets it as if it was his idea.

And even if they could, the US has betrayed them several times.

The fact that anyone in US media or government took it seriously was a laughable farce.

No doubt some Kurdish profiteers were like "Yeah, sure, give us a couple of million and a weapons cache, we'll look into it," then laughed all the way to the Swiss bank.

As was said of Watergate could be said of Hegseth and the Hegseth-directed CENTCOM: "These aren't very bright guys, and things got out of hand."

Certainly the Kurds haven't been averse to tough fights, and they want their own territory...Something is very amiss here

The spineless, cowardly Republicans have got to find a way to rein him in and end this nonsense. They already failed by voting down the War Powers Resolution.

I shuddered when I heard Trump wanted to press them from the comfort of his mock-gold Winter Palace into serving as under-equipped cannonfodder on a suicide mission, so this is good news so far.

I'd also imagine Turkey might have had something to say about any attempts (suicidal or not) to shore up the Kurds. Erdogan's been intent on staying neutral so far, and it'll take some even crazier moves by Iran to change that.
