The Israeli Navy has:
7 corvettes (Sa'ar 5 class, Sa'ar 6 class)
8 missile boats (Sa'ar 4.5 class)
5 submarines (Dolphin class)
45 patrol boats
4 support ships
9,500 active
10,000 reserve
Why didn't Trump ask them for help with keeping open the Straits of Hormuz?

(273 posts)Trump announced that he was sending ships to the area over a week in advance. These aren't clandestine speed boats. How would England, for example, get a ship there without being noticed?

(273 posts)I've never heard of any restrictions on military use of the canal. Who's going to stop an armed vessal?

(1,170 posts)That treaty allowed for cooperation over terrorism in the Sinai, Israel allowed natural gas pipeline to transit to Egypt (they recently shut it off) and Egypt allowed for transit of Israeli goods to Europe. So, they should have had no problem if they coordinated first. The US sends battleships and carrier groups through.

(5,166 posts)The Constantinople Convention, which states:
grants Israel (and any country for that matter) unfettered passage thru the canal.
This treaty has not always been a free pass as Egypt did block access during the Six Day War and the October War.

(7,939 posts)Is it still in effect?

(310 posts)According to the international rules that govern navigation through the Suez Canal, Egypt cannot forbid any vessel from passing through the Canal if there is no war between Egypt and that country.

(5,166 posts)This is still an active treaty.
Israeli warships passed through the canal in November 2024, and both Egypt and Israel cited the Convention as the reason for allowing such passage.
I like old treaties and their applicability over time, as it is a fascinating subject.
One could argue that the treaty remains in effect as long as Egypt decides it's active and in force, as the canal is under their sovereign control and land.
It should be noted that despite my suggestion above, this treaty is not on as solid ground as other old treaties, as some of the signatories, the Russian, German, Ottoman, and Austria-Hungary Empires have broken political lines to their modern incarnations. Other nations, however (UK, France, Spain, and the Netherlands), have political continuity from their signatories from the late 19th century to the present.

(3,831 posts)assuming they can still pass through the Suez Canal.

(7,939 posts)A lot of modern ships can get through older canals.

(3,831 posts)No idea if an aircraft carrier can transit, but that's not what would be involved.
SocialDemocrat61
(7,939 posts)its also the draft. Some older canals are not deep enough for all ships.

(3,831 posts)I once watched ships being moved through the docks of the Panama Canal. That included a couple of "Panamax" type freighters.
SocialDemocrat61
(7,939 posts)The Panama Canal over 40 years later on a different continent. So ships that can pass through one may not be able to pass through the other.

(3,831 posts)That said, I just watched a video on YouTube showing an Israeli warship transiting the Suez Canal.
The largest corvettes in the Israeli navy are comparable to ships used for littoral operations in the US Navy, so they have a fairly shallow draft.

(7,939 posts)So their navy is assisting our navy in the Straits of Hormuz.

They're not really suited to the task.

(12,677 posts)On the other hand pretty well armed for that size.
The Sa'ar 6 has a displacement of almost 1,900 tons at full load and is 90 m (295 ft 3 in) long. It is armed with an Oto Melara 76 mm main gun, two Typhoon Weapon Stations, 32 vertical launch cells for Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, 40 cells for the C-Dome point defense system, 16 anti-ship missiles Gabriel V,[12][13] the EL/M-2248 MF-STAR AESA radar, and two 324 mm (12.8 in) torpedo launchers. It has hangar space and a platform able to accommodate a medium class SH-60-type helicopter.
Lack of a point defense CIWS might be a issue in a swarm attack.
