Tom Steyers resume sounds like a progressives worst nightmare: a private equity billionaire who invested in coal and private prisons now using his personal fortune to buy public office.
Yet Steyer has managed to win over far-left groups and rise to the top of the crowded pack of Democrats in this years governors race.
Steyer has consistently been leading among the Democratic candidates in polling for the past month, and the businessman has recently won several key endorsements, including from major climate and labor unions. The progressive group Our Revolution backed the businessman Monday, and former state Controller Betty Yee endorsed Steyer on Tuesday after she ended her own gubernatorial campaign.
Our Revolution, which was founded by Bernie Sanders and vehemently opposes billionaires involvement in politics, defended its endorsement by saying Steyer is working to challenge the very system that benefits people like him.

Even I'm voting for him and I tend to support more moderate candidates.

(93,790 posts)for this group not endorsing Porter. And I don't think it has to do with any position on issues.

(54,727 posts)(which, btw, I do find (the Sanders endorsement) to be in good faith).
That said, I also would support Steyer over Porter if that was the main choice. I have not been a Porter supporter (for our California governorship) since she announced her candidacy. I think she lacks the temperment for such a high office. She should have stayed in her US House seat, IMHO.
I absolutely would support Porter over any Republican, of course.
I am very much a progressive on most issues, and I do love to see my fellow women in governance. That does not, however, mean I simply will automatically choose to support any progressive woman over any male progressive candidate simple due to their being a female.

(11,053 posts)Steyer has somehow occupied the progressive lane. I'm not sure how that happened, but here we are. A lot of my progressive friends are very positive on him and his positions. When you've a crowded primary, things start firming up as polling and circumstances clear. Between Porter and Steyer, Steyer is perceived to have the momentum and greater viability. And, as stated many times here, Porter just hasn't done herself many favors even among her past supporters. Things started going downhill with the Senate bid.
Which puts Becerra into the Establishment lane which was previously occupied by Swalwell. Former Biden official, AG, etc. He's that "won't rock the boat" mainstream Democrat more in a Newsom mold.
Which may or may serve him. We'll see. California Democrats seem to be feeling a bit froggy. I know many people online (and out of state) love Newsom, but I do not. Far too beholden to the vested interests in Sacramento with one eye ever on the presidency, so he's always gearing his words and his policies with a thought towards perceived national viability.
If someone doesn't get housing and energy costs in hand, the state will continue to have problems.
Steyer just got handed a favor on a silver platter. PG&E is spending $10 million to oppose him. That's the best advertising he's gotten all month.

(26,294 posts)I have no vote in that election since I'm not in CA. But if I were, that would be a big no for me. Of all the things he could invest in, why choose private prisons, which have an incentive to increase their profits through increased inmates and decreased, substandard conditions?

(29,184 posts)The Medicare for All and Green New Deal all-or-nothing requirement for candidates was relaxed, they decided they needed to be more flexible to win elections. So maybe not so surprising.

(37,110 posts)...if Steyer is indeed elected governor. With his record of actions, as opposed to words, that is somewhat worrisome.
