Hillary Clinton suffer the consequences.

(131,044 posts)the exercise of their First Amendment rights - because they once did some bad thing that has nothing to do with the alleged "crime" - only because of a political vendetta against that person? Why the hell in any universe would you think that's acceptable?
He deserves it? No, he does not. Nobody deserves to be prosecuted for exercising their right to free speech. And it made me wonder - sadly - whether some of us alleged liberals are just as eager as Trump to prosecute someone for a thing that isn't a crime but is clearly protected speech just because they don't like him and think he deserves punishment even if it's for something completely unrelated. But take that headline and just change the name to, say, Adam Schiff, and the same folks would be up in arms, as they should be. It shouldn't matter who it is.
So my question to those who think Comey deserves this sham, vindictive prosecution is, WTF is wrong with you? If you became the attorney general in some future Democratic administration, would you prosecute the truly loathsome Kash Patel for writing 86-48 in sea shells because statutes of limitations have run on any crimes he did commit so you can't bust him for those? If your answer is yes, then shame on you for wiping your ass on the same Constitution Trump used for the same thing.
First they came for Jim Comey and I spoke out because I know the rest of the fucking poem.

(131,044 posts)on this completely bullshit charge. I thought we "liberals" were better than that, or at least better-educated about the First Amendment and how it protects everybody's speech, not just that of people we like, but maybe not.

(400 posts)I think this entire thing is terrible but you cant roll around in the mud with Trump and expect to not get dirty. Comey is a big reason why things are the way that they are. We have a progressive SC if not for him and Turtle and this country is way better.

(2,001 posts)If Clinton didn't have that stupid email server, Trump almost certainly doesn't become president. As Democrats we all got upset about Republicans under Bush using a private email server. She had to have understood how it would look.
And given the IG under Obama said it wouldn't have been approved if she had asked, isn't that where the root cause lies? Not saying she should go to jail for it, but I can't give her a pass given she knew she was running for president again.

(31,954 posts)Held a security clearance?
I have.
And the idea of having ANY government communication related to your work or even associates from work arranging a meeting on a private email server could have landed me in prison. This point was stressed to me in no uncertain terms.
I carried two laptops, two cell phones and other assorted electronics when I traveled. One set for my job and one for my personal stuff. Never cross the streams. If someone contacted me about personal stuff on either my government cell or government email, the response was ALWAYS "please contact me at blah@email.com for anything other than official business" and vice versa. If I ever even said "hi" to a foreign national anywhere anytime... there was a contact form I had to fill out.
The rules were serious.
Hillary violated those rules. We can all look at the pestilence currently in the White House, the one that took top secret documents and stored them in a bath room at Mar-de-lardo. Yes he is much much worse than Hillary and should be in prison. But Hillary should have known better. Inconvenient... yeah... it sure is... but either we all follow the rules or get rid of the rules.

(226 posts)Comey got his comeuppance when he was embarrassingly fired and sent into retirement. Charging an American with bogus bullshit just to make their life hell is not something that should be celebrated. If they will do it to him, they will also do it to people that we actually like.

They will use it to fill up all those warehouses they have been buying.

(477 posts)Yeah, I think he's counting on the left being okay with it. Then maybe the next invented crime will be easier to prosecute, against someone we won't be happy about. It's the camel nose under the tent.

(205 posts)I think Comey was trying to avoid an even worse alternative by taking the action he took. Was he right, I don't know. I don't suspect his motives though. This current situation is just another attempt by Trump's sycophants to appease his toddler rage. Nothing about this is good, except that it's liable to fail again.
