Latest Scam Alert

Latest scam alert:  a phone call claiming you've missed a Summons to Jury Duty.  It shows as coming from a Private Number.  I got one of these calls about half an hour ago.  Seemed very strange--especially from a private number--and hung up when the original caller put me on hold to get her "Captain" from the Sheriff's Office, from which she was calling.  While I was googling to see if this is a scam (it is to get money from you to pay a fine for not showing up) I received three more calls from the "private number", which I didn't answer.   https://www.uscourts.gov/court-programs/jury-service/juror-scams

Good grief. What will the scammers think of next?

It's the best and biggest reason to own a Pixel.

2. My phone screens suspected spam calls

This showed as a private number. The only reason I answered it was I'm expecting a tree to be delivered and planted this afternoon.
Normally, if I don't recognize a number, I don't answer, and if it's important, the caller will leave a message.

3. No doubt, one of the "blessings" of AI, which not only automates scams, but AI can imitate family voices.

What is an AI Voice Scam?

An AI voice scam is when scammers use artificial intelligence to mimic someone’s voice– like your child, spouse, parent, or friend– and try to trick you into thinking it’s really them. Often, they’ll call claiming there’s an emergency and ask for a text passcode, money, or sensitive information.

Commonly Asked Questions About AI Voice Scams
1. Can AI Copy My Voice?

Yes. All it takes is a short voice recording (sometimes just a few seconds) from a social media video, voicemail, or even a podcast. AI tools can then clone your voice and make it say things you never actually said.

Enough said.
Set up a family codeword that scammers don't know.
Some just ask it a question that only a family member can answer.
Details in the article linked above.

4. I had a call like that

from a guy who said I had missed a jury summons and would be arrested if I didn't pay a fine over the phone.

I told him to send me something in writing like he was supposed to do. He started pushing and I kept telling him to send me something in writing. This went on for a bit and he started getting defensive. Finally he gave up.

5. I screen my calls but sometimes I let them through and mess with them

I did this with the Microsoft scam. The guy calling had an Indian accent saying he was from Microsoft and they noticed my computer had been hacked. He insisted I had to immediately log into the site he said and kept talking. When paused I said "You do realize I work for Microsoft security, don't you." He hung up immediately.

With the scam from the OP, you could modify what I said by saying "I'm at work in the Police station so I'll turn myself into the chief" and then wait for the scammer's reaction.

All our scam calls were on landline.
It took about an hour to cancel that line.
I was offer a free flip phone so I could keep my old number,
a number I had for 50+ years.

Are you getting them on your mobile phone?

9. I got a couple calls like that...

Both times OPM was hacked. The first one used my maiden name which I haven't used since the 1970s, big tip off there, then they threatened to contact and charge my sister using her maiden name and I had just passed a federal background check so I knew that they were full of it. The call came from a state I used to live in, or so the number indicated.

My sister did call me within hours and said she got a weird call about this alleged issue, I told her it was a scam.

The second was using a number that was one digit off from the county court clerk's office where I lived. Said I was being contacted about an alleged 'judgement' against me and that I had to call back on a 1-800 phone number with a reference number to use and that I had to respond right away to make payment arrangements.

Their big mistake was twofold, once again I had just had a federal background check weeks prior and knew that I was not in any legal trouble because the feds would have let me know about it and I happened to be at the county courthouse when they called. I told them I was unaware of such an issue and that I would just go into the courthouse and speak with the clerk about it to which they insisted I had to use their phone # and the reference #. I insisted that I was going to go in to talk to the clerk and ended the call after which I went right to the clerk's office from which the call allegedly originated, showed them the number on my phone and described what happened... they were pissed.

I blocked the number and that was that.

Nobody ever calls you about such matters, if anything, they will either contact you by mail or someone comes to deliver a summons or the like. No judgement is issued without your knowledge in 90% (?) of cases of this nature. And the IRS does not make calls to your phone either.

I was aware of the OPM hacks so I was anticipating some kind of mischief regarding my personal info.

Now that our PII is up for sale to any and all buyers, Best be super critical when receiving such scam calls.
