This Is The Iran Trump Doesn't Want You To See. Coffee Shops, Uncovered Hair, And Normal People.

Forty years of propaganda told you Iran was a black-clad dungeon. The footage tells a different fucking story. And so does the body count.

Modern Tehran Looks Like Brunswick. Have a Squiz at What Trump’s Been Bombing.

Have a look at this. Properly look. Because what you’re about to see isn’t Surry Hills. It isn’t Newtown. It isn’t some hipster pocket of Brunswick where bearded blokes flog you an 8 dollar single origin in a recycled jam jar.

It’s Tehran.

A cafe-bookstore in the north of the city. Packed out. Hardwood floors, exposed bulbs, the kind of fitout you’d expect to see on a corner in Fitzroy. Twenty and thirty-somethings hunched over laptops. Middle-aged women on second flat whites. Mates yarning over textbooks. The owner there has been redecorating between rounds of getting bombed by Americans, and he’s still pulling shots like nothing happened.

Before we might have had 10 or 15 customers a day, but a week before the ceasefire, people came back and things are returning to normal.

Returning to normal. Read that again. Because the scene France 24 just walked into is a thriving fucking metropolis. Women out in the open with their hair down, no scarves, makeup on, dressed in whatever the hell they want. Blokes in Levi’s and Adidas. Couples holding hands. Old timers reading the paper. The full normal-life panorama, in the country your evening news has been telling you for 40 years is a black-clad theocratic dungeon where everyone gets stoned to death for owning a Spotify account.

Home of the bonesaw and 2000 princes.

The Shi'a are generally more progressive than the Sunni.

7. Recent news stories indicate the morality police have been less visible in Tehran of late.

I don't support what is going on with this conflict - but do understand it is also useful to the regime for their own propaganda purposes to play down their fucked up fundamentalist tendencies at this time. The upper class resorts in Iran have traditionally been
exempt from the morality police - so that should tell you something about class and power in Iran. IOW, the morality police are
useful for a monied class to enable them to intimidate the major part of the less-monied population from seeking reforms.
Ask people outside of the capital about the morality police.

The upper class have traditionally been exempt from the morality police here. Wealthy people can always get abortions, for example. The wealthy are exempt from being hassled by the morality police in the form of the Christian nationalists in Congress, in state governments, on the friggin' Supreme Court!

A monied class intimidates the major part of the less-monied population from seeking reforms. Gosh, that sure sounds familiar!

That should tell you something about class and power in the United State, shouldn't it though?

What about the Good/Petti murders?

What about SCOTUS gutting the Voting Rights Act?

What about the administration gutting the meager social safety net here and abroad?

What about Congress (including some Democrats) giving Israel the weapons to continue genocide in Gaza?

What about non-stop gun violence by both citizens and law enforcement that takes far more lives than the Iranian morality police?

What about ICE rounding up brown people for the crime of being brown and tossing them in for profit concentration camp?

What about right-wing christian nationalists praying all over the Donald in the People's House?

You get the picture. I could go on and on.

Maybe we should get our house in order before we try to police the rest of the world.

Just because they look modern and progressive in small business and accommodations doesn't mean things are great. But yeah, we have many faults of our own. Trump administration has no business criticizing another country's freedom or civil rights issues when he's trying to turn the US into an authoritarian state.

Sky After Dark: — the evening lineup on Sky News Australia, our local Murdoch-owned answer to Fox News, except somehow worse because the accents make it sound like your racist uncle has a media degree. Runs from about 6pm onwards and features a rotating cast of red-faced commentators screaming about woke schoolteachers, the ABC, electric vehicles, immigrants, wind turbines, Greta Thunberg, and whichever Labor politician has most recently failed to bow deeply enough to a coal lobbyist. The target demographic is angry retirees in regional Queensland who think the country peaked in 1955 and have a Southern Cross tattoo on at least one calf. If you’ve ever seen Tucker Carlson and thought “this needs more Anglo whinging and a worse haircut,” congratulations, you’ve imagined Sky After Dark. The phrase “the average Sky After Dark viewer” is shorthand for someone whose entire worldview was assembled from headlines they didn’t read past, delivered by men who get paid to be angry at things they don’t understand.
