I have been driving a truck for better than 40 years now.
When I started, to scale my truck gross weight, it cost about $3 bucks, a buck per axle. Then about 15 years later is was up to $5 to weigh, then fast forward 15 years again, it was up 7 dollars and you might get a free reweight then it went $1! But now $14.75 and $4 to reweigh! That has just jump up in the past 2 years from $10! It will be in less than a year they are raising the price to $16.75 and $4.75 to reweight each time! It could cost almost $30 just to get the weight right for you to get legal.
The company I work for pays for scale, but a large amount of companies rely on the driver to pay scale and parking fees!
That is a lot of money! Then to add to that cost? Showers can cost upwards of $20, parking fees from $20 to $40 at some of the largest truck stops. There are sometime you have to pay, just to be closer to a pick up or delivery point. Usually that those cost are waived if you buy certain amount of fuel or store items! Yet, many truck stops charge even if you purchased fuel or store items.
So, it is not just food and drinks or anything else that expensive! This is an insight to what we drivers face.
Its been like this for several years. I, myself, look for the truck stops that dont charge, but there are times where is no choice. I shower at our designated spots after I get fuel.
