Pastor Robert Jeffress: "It looks like President Trump has a better understanding of what the Bible teaches than the Pope"

A pastor who has spent years stumping for Trump, speaking at rallies, blessing campaigns shouldn’t be lecturing the Pope about "separate roles" of church and state.

If you want to be a full‑time political operative, fine, but then stop hiding behind tax‑exempt "ministry" status while you do it.

Dear Pastor Jeffries, the Bible says thou shalt have no gods before me. What's up with that golden statue of trump?

Judy (@bsjcr.bsky.social) 2026-05-09T18:16:29.173Z

Yeah
I suppose technically he teaches the Bible
He's kind of a guy of who not to be
For example the seven deadly sins
How many "Christians" would literally teach their children to be like Donald Trump?

..could it be that your patient had a hard time describing what her issues were, exactly?
I know sometimes it's difficult to tell the doctor just what I'm feeling and how it is bothering me. Pain can be so subjective. So can treatment progress.
But if she's just trying to explain she has more knowledge that you on the issue because she read some bullshit on Facebook then you have every right to ask her is she just needs to treat herself then.

It's just that she wanted a referral to the wrong kind of specialty-care provider. I told her the referral would be declined due to the diagnosis, and that we should refer elsewhere instead. She started getting testy toward the end, so I just told her we were out of time. (We were. I had gone fifteen minutes over trying to talk her down from her pet specialty referral, and was late getting to my last patient of the day. That was pretty much emblematic of my Friday. Praying tomorrow is better...)

But please don't let those sorts of interaction color your view of all patients who try to stay engaged and current on the state of research when it comes to their own afflictions. I'm sure it is exhausting to have to explain that the nonsense that someone read on Facebook or heard from their husband's uncle's cousin's friend isn't a valid basis for medical treatment, but some of us who do have serious chronic health conditions actually do try and keep aware from actual reputable sources.

In my experience, good physicians actually like having patients who provide high-quality observations about what's going on with their condition, especially if they are medically and scientifically conversant and can articulate their symptoms properly. But there is another cohort who rolls their eyes and treats any patient who reviews the medical literature as placing unearned trust in "Dr. Google" or WebMD just upon hearing a variant of the phrase "did some research".

In the latter case, clarifying that I'm referring to peer-reviewed research from The Lancet, NEJM, the NIH, etc. not Alex Jones or some other snake-oil salesman peddling colloidal silver, that usually clears up the misunderstanding. But it really doesn't engender a lot of trust in the doctor / patient relationship when that's the starting point.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that you're one of the MDs who react this way, it's just worth keeping in mind that "did some research" doesn't automatically equate to "give me ivermectin for COVID because some podcaster said it works".

And I love the vast majority of my patients. And they seem to love me. ( I have a 4.6 out of 5 on Yelp). This time, it was different; she is a patient with whom I had had a good relationship prior to this. Also, we're simpatico politically. She's a staunch anti-Trumpster. She just got a bee in her bonnet about where she should be referred for her problem, and convinced it was the wrong one instead of the right one.

bearing false witness against the Pope (by lying about what's in the Bible). And he knows it. Now, he could argue that the secular Trump is making secular decisions despite what the Bible says (though I would say those are still crap decisions), but there's no way someone who makes his money by being a pastor should be lying so obviously about the Bible.

That pastor is just wrong.

Norman Vincent Peale was Trump's childhood pastor.

He taught a Positive Thinking philosophy, precursor to Prosperity Gospel.

He was anti-Catholic; he was one of those ministers who said a Catholic could not be President when JFK was running.

He was a defender of capitalism.

There are traces in Trump into what Peale taught; such as Trump's "magical thinking"

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/21/politics/trump-magical-thinking-peale-coronavirus

Are we seeing traces of Trump's hatred of Pope from his childhood pastor.
