This is very impressive, except for the ability to monitor every aspect of residents' lives.

their approach is to build the cities out in advance of population shifts. As the video says, they are thinking 50 years from now. Some of the earlier under populated sites have seen population growth later.

Not based on reality. China has problems like everyone, but they are growing and modernizing. The current pace could lead to a time where China is a leader on tech, the environment, and diplomacy. The current path for the US under Trump is making the US a follower and gadfly while China moves towards leadership.

The "China Update" youtube channel is a particularly notorious piece of fantastical anti-China propaganda that is regularly posted on DU.

spent all of the Pentagon's budget and taxed the billionaires 50%, they will never catch up to China's infrastructure and technology.
