'Dangerous politics': Trump suspends joint defence board with Canada

The Trump regime is trying to bully Canada again. With this latest move, I think Canada-US relations are finished for decades.

That most undiplomatic of diplomats, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, has already warned of unspecified consequences for NORAD, if Ottawa does not buy 88 F-35A fighter jets. In this light, the “reassessment” of the joint defense board should probably be considered a warning shot across the bow.

Canada has been a good and reliable ally but that alliance has faded from memory in an increasingly unreliable Washington.

it's on to shaking down someone else. I don't know what pisses me off more, the abrogation of treaties and agreements, constant threats, deceit and intimidation or the support for separatists. Either way the US is becoming a rouge state.

The US can afford to be international in its presence in part because we have little to fear from Mexico or Canada. But what if we did...

Here’s the part the headlines bury. The PJBD is supposed to meet at least once a year. The last published readout of a meeting was November 2024 — meaning the board hasn’t actually convened since Trump came back to the White House in January 2025.

So Colby is “pausing” a body that wasn’t running. He’s revoking participation in a forum he wasn’t participating in. He’s threatening to stop doing a thing he already wasn’t doing to a country that already “paused” the ENTIRE Military relationship with the Trump Regime

This is the diplomatic equivalent of breaking up with someone you’ve been ghosting for 17 months.

And what does the PJBD actually do? It’s an advisory body. It makes recommendations. It doesn’t command troops, doesn’t run NORAD, doesn’t move money, doesn’t fly a single aircraft. It’s a room where senior officials discuss continental defence and draft policy memos.
