Why is this not receiving more coverage - Tank-rupture tragedy may be deadliest in Washington history, governor says

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/may/27/washington-paper-mill-implosion

Two people dead and another nine missing and presumed dead after paper mill tank holding chemicals imploded

The death toll from the tank-rupture incident at a Washington state paper mill on Tuesday rose to two, with nine people still missing and presumed dead, authorities said.

The Longview fire department said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon that one person who was transported to the hospital following the disaster at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co on Tuesday morning had died.

“We’re bracing ourselves for this being the deadliest industrial tragedy in modern Washington state history,” Washington governor Bob Ferguson said at a news conference with local authorities on Wednesday.

Worker safety is primarily governed by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) rather than federal OSHA, because Washington is an "OSHA-approved State Plan" state.

It is my understanding that regulations here were more stringent than required by Feds long before the felon rolled back regulations and generally decimated OSHA. I don't see the Democratic state legislature rolling anything back here, but would need to do more research.

“released white liquor, a highly destructive chemical mixture used in the paper industry. ”

Burns through clothes and skin and bone into the blood stream.

Sounds like napalm.

“contamination had entered the river on Tuesday, officials said, and dead carp were found”

Very bad news it’s in the Columbia river.

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/live-updates-from-deadly-paper-mill-implosion-in-longview/

Officials on Wednesday confirmed that two people were killed, eight were injured and nine are missing at Nippon Dynawave Packaging after a major implosion Tuesday morning at the pulp and paper mill in Longview, in Southwest Washington.

I fear the nine missing are likely dead.

There have not been any relaxing in safety regulations that I’m aware of. There are more regulations involving rail safety coming on in the next year.

Ie. do this, do do this, use this number.

You don’t push it to the “limits”. The limit is the regulation. You are in violation or not. There is not degrees of violation up to the regulations.
