MI-GOV: UAW endorses Jocelyn Benson for governor
Benson, Michigan's two-term secretary of state, is viewed as the heavy favorite for her party's nomination for governor in the August primary. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, Benson's lone primary opponent, had been pushing hard for the UAW's support to bolster his underdog campaign.
The UAW sided with Benson, calling the 2026 gubernatorial election a critical race.
"As secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson has proved shes not afraid to stand up against the most powerful billionaires in the name of working-class Michiganders across the state," a statement from the UAW said. "UAW members need that kind of energy in Michigans Capitol."
Swanson, who's been endorsed by a string of other union groups, vowed on Friday to stay in the primary race through the Aug. 4 election. Absentee ballots become available to voters on June 25.
