(180 posts)and earth doesn't really care if people pay attention or not.
Taking it for granted has a karma-like way of getting around to the reminders

(28,074 posts)Earthquakes are pretty rare in the NYC area. I've felt two over a about a 68 yr span.
Two quick jolts in 24 from a part of NJ quite west and somewhat south of us. The thought of an earthquake didn't even occur to me!
The "funnier" one (? a 3 to 4) because of how our apt building was situated partly on a hill, and how I reacted happened in the '80s. It's "funny" if you want to hear it.
Obviously they are not funny.
While we get some hurricane effects, and even a rare hurricane, someone once said our N'or Easters are supposedly a winter-variety of hurricanes.(I should look that up!)...
It's also quite rare for us to have tornados! We had a few in the mid '00s in the Brooklyn & Queens area and one in rhe NYC/NJ harbor (a water spout) while I lived in Brooklyn- F0 -F1.And one that was in The Bronx into Connecticut.
Being a bit of a weather & geography buff I pay attention to this stuff.

(5,179 posts)... I felt a pretty intense one, but even here in Vermont we've felt a few "meh", as malaise would characterize them. Of course, there was Irene in 2011; we couldn't even get out of the village on horseback for several days! We've had recent downpours so heavy I had to pull off the road 'cause I couldn't see, and the streets were flooded in a few places. Derechos, straight-line winds with phenomenal power, have occurred a few times, and just a couple of weeks ago there was an actual tornado in Woodstock.
Other than that, things are pretty calm here, weather-wise. Though I guess it doesn't sound like it!
Well, the Sun's shining today, so I'll be happy with that. Have a good one!

(28,074 posts)Irene did some major damage - lots of downed trees and their effects. More so in Brooklyn where it landed; I was up in The Bronx.
Having to pull off road in severe downpours - eeks.
With Sandy way worse. I even bought a crank powered radio just in case. The thing I remember after was seeing photos of one of the most southern of Manhattan subway stations which has 2 different lines - one waaay deep; maybe 4 - 5 stories down. The whole thing flooded up to about 1+ ft on the uppermost mezzanine but totally watered in all below!

(5,179 posts)... didn't get walloped by Irene near as hard as we did, even so far as pooh-poohing "a little rain". That is, until they came down to have a look. A long stretch of the highway was washed out down to bedrock by the river, which was normally around 50' wide, but was now over 500' wide, with pickups, coffins, and big chunks of houses roaring downstream. The Army dropped off chopper-loads of MREs in the first few days, and the little elementary school was giving away free donated food. BIG fun.

(5,179 posts)... it brought out the best in our neighbors and ourselves. Folks are cordial, but keep to themselves for the most part. But when the proverbial substance hits the fan with a resounding SPLAT!, they all pull together.

(5,179 posts)... we live on a dirt road, and the nearest source for a quart of milk is 5 miles away! But in the remote west, it can be 25 miles, so I ain't complainin'.

(28,074 posts)I absolutely love our beautiful tree filled green landscape of the NE!
Also.deeply love the sculpturaness, and colors of the high desert of AZ! Waaay back I rented a car w a friend in Flagstaff, AZ. We visited the Navajo & Hopi Nations. Later went to the Grand Canyon by tour bus! So I've been in the remote SW.

Melissa last year was a major disaster for us but we did not have this horrific loss of life and Kingston and St Andrew escaped for the most part.
