General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHad a very sad conversation with a waiter in Trieste, Italy tonight.
He is a very polite, well educated, and friendly man in his twenties. In our brief encounter, he expressed his desire to visit the U.S. He wants to see our natural beauty, and climb some of our mountains.
He and his friends will not visit because they are terrified of ICE, and our nativist government. They fear that they will be picked up on an American street, and dumped in a detention center.
"I see it all on TV, and I can not take the chance".
If we scare off visitors, it will take a generation to repair the damage caused by our MAGA overlords. WE will be the losers.

(5,175 posts)MAGA is finding international visitors who are attending soccer playoff games in the U.S. who speak favorably about their experiences here.
I hope your Italian waiter becomes aware of some of that positive feedback, decides to visit and has a wonderful time.

(61,271 posts)that the FIFA people liking America means the media lied about their distrust of Trump's America.
I responded that all but one city, Dallas, had a Democratic mayor. And yes, people are enjoying being in these cities. This means Trump lied calling many of them hellholes.
The truth, blue cities, most in blue states that always welcomed tourists and are fun to be in

(12,863 posts)If a handful of those tourists had problems thats out of 68 million, that would be like .0000 something of a chance of something bad, you'll be in much more danger on the drive to the airport

(12,812 posts)We did a golf cart tour of Rome back in September of 2024. The driver was talking to my husband and I when we were waiting for the other family to come back to the cart. His grandparents moved to Florida, and he was going through the immigration process to join them there. He felt that there were more opportunities here than in Italy. We cautioned him to hold off making the final decision until after the election, because even legal migrants from Europe might have problems. I often wonder what he did.

(2,217 posts)Its not worth the risk visiting right now, and not until republicans are out of power. They have shown that theyre not interested in reigning in ICE. On the contrary they keep giving Trump everything he wants to keep this going.

Some people (not me) may want to visit the very flat Plain States.

(69,705 posts)not the only one with those sentiments. We all need to get into "good trouble". We have a very "unstable" what individual or criminal in the WH. He is ruining our country, and our leaders must back their words with ACTIONS!!! July 4th for some will not be a celebration.

(913 posts)and since last January I will not get on an airplane or travel to a red State. Fortunately I live in Massachusetts which is surrounded by blue States.
A few weeks ago I went to the white mountains to see the lupine bloom. Only bloom for two weeks a year. Plenty of wonderful things to do and see in the blue Northeast.

(39,481 posts)Italians aren't on Trump's watch list. The only precaution I'd take as a Euro visiting the US is wiping my search history off my phone - which everyone should do regularly, anyway.
I'm seeing F tons of World Cup visitors here, and they're all having a good time.
If any tourist overstays their visa, then they might have issues - which was true before that MFer and will be true after that MFer.

(3,532 posts)My wife is a Canadian citizen. My mom lives in Arizona. My wife has flatly refused to enter the States since the orange hellbeast took office. She's not enamored of the idea of getting scooped up and tossed into a detention cell somewhere and I honestly can't blame her for being afraid of the possibility.
It really sucks since she hasn't seen my mom since we went home in early 2020. Every time since then I've gone back alone.
Thanks a lot, Trump.

(7,304 posts)as long as Mr. trump's jibbering his jabber, and I can't say I blame them. A nun was arrested for no other reason than being non-white only days ago. The heat from our oppressive state is too much for its own citizens, let alone visitors and tourists.

(40 posts)I grew up in a neighborhood with Italian and Japanese immigrants. My cousins are half Sicilian, with dark skin, black hair and brown eyes. My thought when all this deportation BS started was, would they be targeted? Would the kids and grandkids of the lovely people I was surrounded by in my youth be detained because they "looked foreign?" We received many of the refugees from Southeast Asia after Vietnam. There's a large Pacific Islander population, who are either American citizens or American nationals depending on their island of origin, but all 100% legal. They've been harassed by ICE. Our Indigenous neighbors have been detained. It was never about immigration, but ethnic cleansing of anyone not lily-white.
