(8,297 posts)I'm on a lot of stock market threads. Some of the regulars are pretty right wing, and a lot are surprisingly "religious" in a way only high net worth investors can be. I'm seeing an increase in posts about commies destroying capitalism, and banning religion.
Someone has turned the spigot on and left it running. Their fears are interesting to say the least.

Entirely predictable. Equating democratic socialism with communism is convenient and effective among an ignorant voting population.

Checking quickly, I see that the John Birch Society is rapidly gaining members in the 2020s, with a lot of them in Texas. They were a pivotal organization in the 1950s and early 60s in the "fight against Communism." Of course, the Soviet Union still existed back then, along with China. Communism isn't really much of a thing any more in governments, but it's still a nasty word to US conservatives.
So, they're trying to trot that old crap out again. Go read about the JBS on Wikipedia and scroll down to teh most recent additions to the content. Looks like that's what's going on. The old guys are dead now, but not their old ideas, apparently.
