Trump May Have Just Broken the World Cup

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/trump-fifa-world-cup-usmnt-folarin-balogun-suspension-intervention-live-updates.html

It was of course inevitable that a World Cup hosted by the U.S. while FIFA’s first and only peace prize winner Donald Trump is president would involve some precedent-shattering political intervention which outraged the world, and now it’s happened. Over the weekend, FIFA rescinded the automatic suspension of the USMNT’s top scoring player, striker Folarin Balogun, following a pressure campaign by the White House and Trump — who personally spoke with FIFA president Gianni Infantino about the matter. Balogun received a controversial red card, following a VAR review, during America’s Round-of-32 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was thus supposed to be automatically barred from playing in the next game in the tournament. FIFA swears the extraordinary reversal wasn’t politically influenced, but everyone else is far from convinced. The move has not only called into question the legitimacy of the U.S. team, but the integrity of this year’s tournament and (once again) of FIFA, itself.

worthy of a red card, it was bad judgement from the referee.

Having said that, the call was made, and there is no way that it should have been overturned. It is unprecedent, but of course, we have the president of FIFA who is as corrupt as the USA president, the two get together and...it happens.

FIFA is most probably one of the most corrupt organizations in the World, it just proved it.

Linguistic interpretation is primarily cultural and secondarily personal, IMO. I've had others object when I referred to Trump as an "orange shitgibbon" because of their respect for those other primates. As another example, I find the use of the word "pig" to refer to men in general to be extremely offensive. I find the c word more off-colour than offensive, but that's just me. Out of respect for others' sensitivities, I just don't use it. There are more generally acceptable ways of making the underlying point.

I'm sorry if my position upsets you.

… I have no problem calling someone a cunt—especially a man who’s specifically deemed women worthy of the insult, which I think makes them (and especially HIM) even more worthy of having it thrown back in their faces.

I can’t think of a better insult to a guy who thinks he’s the most macho dude in the world. I would think this term in particular is the one that he would take maximum offense at—which makes it the perfect choice. His machismo is all an act and for a “macho man,” he surely does bend over to Putin’s every wish, doesn’t he? So yes, I’ll take him down at every opportunity with a word I think would infuriate him like no other. It’s not implying anything against us as women—it’s just a word, and he point is that HE would think it the ultimate insult to HIM.

Seriously. We’re adult here. Listen to news podcasts and note that even professionals will throw out a fuck here and there because this timeline is ridiculous. Everyone needs a way to vent. Do we really need to be whacked on the knuckles by a room monitor when we use a word someone is offended by? You assume a lot in speaking for “most American women,” I assure you, just as I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds pearl-clutching every bit as annoying.

THIS time and place, it is a misogynist, sexist slur, so I would ask you to remove it. A little common courtesy, as requested by other DU members as well. The fact that so many are now so casually using it as the slur that it is does NOT make its use any less offensive. That this has to repeatedly be stated on DU is disheartening.

But I've listened to many commentaries on this, and the common message, perhaps pushed by a corrupt FIFA leadership, is that there was agreement among players and coaches that the red card was a bad call.

I don't really care about soccer/football or any other sport to see it move it into a political domain. Mostly I think it's Trump faking power and influence when the shaky reality of the call was already understood within the players and teams

Or is it just that you hate Trump that he lives rent free in your head and you can't imagine that other people aren't so consumed by him. I get it, he sucks. But most of the rest of the world isn't nearly as consumed by him as too many of us are. If FIFA sending the World Cup to Russia and Qatar didn't diminish the World Cup, neither is Trump whining and getting a suspension suspended isn't going to do it

Probably should have been a caution. The player accepted it and the coach.
FIFA has done this before, vacating punishment for a red card. For Christiano Ronaldo. He had 2 games of suspension removed.
That set a precedent.
The biggest problem is the real or perceived interference by Trump. That is what is so bad about this in my opinion. Infanti could have said I talked to a bunch of officials, referees and we thought the decision was too harsh. Then agree or not people would move on.
Having Trump, seemingly, in a public manner put the squeeze on changes the equation. Not for the better.

The point is, you accept the outcome. Your dad doesn't call the league to get a reversal.

I watch a lot of sports. There are missed calls and bad calls in every game. It's part of the game, and it happens all the time.

Part of being a mature adult, is accepting the rules you've agreed to and accepting the fact that things don't always go your way. You dust yourself off, move on, and accept that sometimes the cookie crumbles your way, and sometimes it doesn't.

This is just one more example that Donnie Dipshit and his fucking MAGAts don't think the rules apply to them.

If Balogun plays, he's no different than the lowest MAGAt Proud Boy out there.

He didn’t cry or complain. To equate Balogun with MAGA is deluded and infantile.

What I can't figure is if the FIFA president made his decision because of Trump's call or despite it.

I understand the motivation for the "peace prize." FIFA was concerned that Trump would block players from entering the US or, worse, having ICE start arresting players. It was a weasel move but it guaranteed Trump wouldn't disrupt the World Cup when it was too late to move games.

At this point, there is nothing Trump can do to interfere with the World Cup. By the next time the US might host the World Cup, Trump will have long gone to his award. I just don't see a reason for FIFA to continue kissing Trump's fat posterior.

There has long been scandals in cheating in various matches. In certain areas of the world, it is tacitly accepted that if you don’t get caught it is legal. The France versus Paraguay match was an excellent example of that attitude; had Paraguay won they would not have disqualified themselves for their actions in the match.

Political favoritism, bribery, quid pro quo, retribution, racketeering, money laundering, kickbacks, vote-selling...it's all part of FIFA's standard ops. On top of that, they gave Trump a totally made-up "FIFA peace prize" to curry favoritism against ICE interference with foreign tourists and teams traveling to the US.

I loved watching the matches. But FIFA is a criminal enterprise.

FIFA should have moved all US games to Mexico and Canada citing Trump as the reason but they already gave him the FIFA peace prize.
