Team USA Loses 4-1

What happened was an embarrassment and it is largely on the shoulders of Mango Mussolini who literally ruined the motivation of the team and made this World Cup about him.

Everything Trump touches dies.

Fuck trump.

Infantino and FIFA are corrupt. Adding Trump just brings (a lot) more corruption.
The only way it could get bigger is to merge FIFA and the IOC into one organization

For a couple of reasons. But the biggest reason is that our best athletes don't play soccer. Travel soccer is mostly middle-upper class kids. Not that those kids can't be great athletes. It just closes the door on kids whose families can't afford it.

BTW, same is true with baseball. Our best athletes are no longer playing baseball for the same reasons.

Certainly for girls' sports, they're definitely more likely to play soccer in school. Much of this is at the instigation of parents who want their kids to participate without the fear of serious injuries.

So even though you're correct that the professional athletes gravitate to football for the money, the scholastic programs have encouraged soccer for the high schools and some colleges.

I concur!

For the school-aged kids, soccer is a main sport out here in California (or at least in SoCal).

Some of the girls (who play) take it very seriously as they work towards getting scholarships to college.

Really liking it, except for those thuggish teams who seemed to be auditioning for a movie what with so much overly dramatic 'Oh, my boo-boo, he hit me..' instead of playing the game.

So much more exciting than US NFL snooze-fests. I hope US fans turn their backs on the NFL and show up for the better game!

As to the US team loss this evening, maybe they just didn't want to have to go to the White House & listen to how Trump saved them with his whiny-ass phone call snit fit about our 'star' getting a red card.

Used to live next to a big park in Tucson and LOVED pee-wee football (US style, soccer hadn't caught on back then) and Little League Baseball. My old collie mix loved watching those kids with me.

Town I live in now has great kids' sports programs and I see lots of 'football' practices going on when I drive by any of the sports facilities. Kids are out there, working hard & blessings to the good people coaching.

...in all kinds of weather. We live in the greater Chicago area, and while we don't get as hot as Tucson, 90 degree heat and 80+% humidity is quite miserable.

Ealy spring and late fall can be pretty damn cold. I watched one game in 17 degree weather. The kids were wearing snow pants under their soccer short. I felt like I was standing on the deck of the Titanic.

I used to say to fellow soccer moms that we would never stand outside in these conditions to watch our husbands doing anything, only our kids -

Wore parka several times for the fireworks on Fourth of July

Cold has never been a problem for me. And I would love to see your Chicago, especially with the Obama Center open, but can't fly, too old to take the road trip.

Am southeast of Tucson now, and at a higher altitude so not as hot as in that now-huge city. Did rather like the 'Baked Apple' when I lived there years ago and it wasn't so big. Lots to do there, good music scene.

We didn't lose because of Trump. We lost because Belgium was better. Like most other countries, Belgium puts a lot more infrastructure into soccer than we do.

They brought a player who is as good as Doku off the bench. There's a reason they are a top 10 in the world team.

Trump had nothing to do with it. Quit giving him power over everything in your mind.

Most of us know he needs to be in an institution because of his megalomania and fuckedupidness that makes him try to get into everything in hopes he finds something he doesn't fail at.

Edited to add: Yep Belgium was MUCH better team, so 'connected' to each other! I saw some passes were the passer didn't even turn to look if intended receiver was there, he KNEW. Amazing discipline and teamwork. Hope people coaching kids in the US will emulate Belgium's coaching techniques.

Most Americans don't even know the rules of the game.

The US never had a chance of winning the whole enchilada. They did well just to win two out of the four games they played.

Meanwhile MLB is mid season and the Tampa Bay Rays are kicking butt.

43. Belgian national team mocks U.S., Trump after World Cup win
Tue Jul 7, 2026, 10:55 AM

An X post from the Belgian side reading “overturn this” circulated Monday night.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2026/07/07/belgian-national-team-mocks-us-trump-after-world-cup-win/

First came the beatdown. Then came the mocking.

After Belgium throttled the United States 4-1 in the World Cup Round of 16 on Monday night, the Belgians had even more fun at the Americans’ expense, mostly zeroing in on the saga of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun.

His one-game suspension for the red card he received in the Round of 32 was lifted by FIFA on Sunday, after President Donald Trump requested a review from the governing body. The soccer world, and especially Belgium, responded with fury, accusing FIFA of placating Trump.

Thus, after the win, the Belgian national team’s X account posted a photo of the team’s fourth goal marked with the message “Overturn this.” Similarly, after that goal, many of Belgium’s players did the “Trump dance,” swaying their hips and rocking their hands back and forth.

“A lot has happened off the pitch over the last two days,” Belgium midfielder Nicolas Raskin said after the game. “There was a sense of injustice within the squad, and we were determined to respond on the field.”
