My wife is 1" shorter than when she was younger; I'm only 3/16ths of an inch shorter.
We're still 10 years short of 80, but a "few inches" seems like a lot.
I get the compression of discs in the spine, but a few inches is a LOT of compression.

But my feet are at least an inch longer.

I was 5'9" tall when I was 19. (I stopped growing pretty late.)
At my physical last January I was 5'8&13/16ths of an inch.
So for me, its only been 0.1875" in 51 years.
That's why I'm so surprised.
