NY Gov. Hochul's opponent just released a nasty AI-generated ad: "We asked AI what a truthful Hochul ad would look like"

Right away, that takes advantage of the people naive/gullible enough to believe AI models are accurate and tell the truth. We know from studies done that there are way too many of those people, whose gullibility makes them sitting ducks for disinformation from AI. I keep reminding DUers that asking AI models for facts, explanations and analyses is a waste of time, because AI does make mistakes and you can't trust anything it generates.

Here Bruce Blakeman, Hochul's opponent, is betting on people being foolish enough to believe that if AI supposedly said this is what a truthful Hochul ad would be, the AI is right.

You need to see what AI can be used for if ANYONE is this foolish about AI. And why you should NEVER treat genAI as a good source of information, or encourage anyone else to be that trusting of AI.

2. There are people gullible enough to think that if an AI model said something, it's the truth. That's a weakness

propagandists can exploit.

And while it seems very unlikely that Blakeman could ever have been able to prompt an AI to produce anything this dishonest, most genAI models are owned and controlled by people aligned with Trump and the GOP. We've seen how Musk can tamper with responses Grok AI gives.

If Republicans will try to exploit people being sitting ducks for whatever AI tells them, it's imperative for Democrats to warn people not to trust AI.

6. I live in one of those rural red areas of NY so I know that they exist.

My small city is purple surrounded by rural red farming areas and small red villages and hamlets. There is another small city in my county which is solid blue. Buffalo and some of its suburbs are blue. Downstate (NYC area) is a strong blue area with a few red pockets.

There are other cities that are blue or purple scattered through the state. Even in the rural red areas, there are individuals and small groups that are not red.

There are also a lot of Independents. Besides the very left DSA, there is a similar party here called the Working Families Party.

In the current political climate, with Trump's unpopulariity, I do not think that NYers will choose a far right MAGA governor.

7. I'm less concerned about this case than I am about the GOP targeting people dumb/gullible about AI.

We have people even on DU who post AI Overviews and quotes telling us "what ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude/Grok said" as if that AI slop is worth reading and paying attention to as something that's accurate. No matter how often they're told that genAI chatbots aren't reliable sources, they still treat the bots as if they are.

That's why the start of this ad caught my attention. It's aimed at people who are particularly gullible if AI is cited as a source.

This is the first ad I've seen trying to take advantage of that bizarre gullibility from the very first words: "We asked AI..."

even beyond political elections.

Since we know that MAGAs are using it now for political ads, we need to get ahead of this right away with our own ads, using some specific examples of AI errors that people can recognize and relate to. The ads don't have to address a specific campaign. They can be done like a public service announcement.

Or, if addressing a specific campaign, we can use a general example first of AI error, then a specific example of an AI ad that targets a candidate, followed by verifiable facts.

I personally have been annoyed when doing a search and getting an AI overview on a subject which I know has errors.

11. I live in Albany County. We are very blue. My suburb is 80/20 blue. We haven't elected a R in well over two

decades. Very often the R’s don’t even put up a candidate. My Congressperson hasn’t had a serious challenge ever, and neither did the Congressman before him. The R candidate can’t even afford to run commercials.

No one even knew who Gillibrand’s opponent was last time she ran.

I have yet to see one ad from Blakeman on TV, just ones that randomly pop up on the tennis “pods” I watch on YouTube.

All the big cities upstate are Blue. Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany. Add those to NYC and it’s extremely difficult for a Republican to win statewide elections.

I expect to see a lot of commercials from both candidates in Stefanik’s old district. Saw a lot from both R’s before the primary. They’ll be a lot of money put into that race.
