'What would the Founders think?'

I see this a lot, and quite honestly, a certain Clark Gable-as-Rhett Butler quote comes to mind.

If you want to know what the Founders would’ve thought on something, look at one of the most important Founders, Thomas Jefferson, who felt the Constitution should be updated every 19 years because he warned it would get outdated. It’s been 34 years.

And considering what Christian Nationalists are trying to, how Byron Donald’s wanted to criminalize peaceful protests against Israel, I’m not sure even they are following the spirit of the Founders.

America has evolved with amendments beyond the Bill of Rights, and many Americans (such as myself) want certain new amendments. Would the Founders have imagined 50 states, people of color being free, let alone as President and Vice President? They might’ve imagined someone like the Felon in the White House, but evidently didn’t imagine others in power folding like lawn chairs when it came to holding him accountable.

So, spare me of what the Founders from the 18th and 19th Centuries would’ve thought. My gratitude goes to them for setting this country up - a country which has greatly evolved since their initial rules.

Beyond our gratitude for getting things set up, we owe our Founders nothing.

Some of it is severely outdated, though.

“ the listing of certain rights in the Constitution does not mean that people do not have other unwritten rights “

Essentially, the Ninth Amendment prevents the government from arguing that if a right isn't explicitly listed, it doesn't exist, serving as a vital protection for personal liberty

Which isn’t going to happen.

Like the impeachment process, the amendment process has been eliminated the consequence of Republican obstructionism.

And that obstructionism is the consequence of the Framers’ unwarranted fear of the people, of denying the people access to the levers of power, and giving the states too much power, where the people are denied the means by which to rid themselves of authoritarian despots, corrupt members of Congress, and blind partisan Supreme Court justices.
