Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows officially launched her Senate bid to replace Graham Platner on Thursday afternoon.
After serious consideration, I am announcing my campaign for United States Senate, because I believe that together we can unify Democrats in Maine at this difficult time, and forge ahead with a campaign that fights for working people, stands up to a broken system thats working against us, and defeats Susan Collins, Bellows wrote in a post on X.
Bellows, who recently lost in the Democratic primary for governor, had been widely expected to enter the race after Platner suspended his campaign. She was fielding calls about a possible bid in the days after POLITICO reported an allegation of sexual assault against him, according to one person familiar with her campaign, granted anonymity to discuss internal conversations. Platner denied the allegation.
A progressive Democrat, Bellows has built a national profile as Maines secretary of state, often clashing with President Donald Trump over election administration. She joins several other former gubernatorial hopefuls, including former public health official Nirav Shah and former Platner ally Troy Jackson, as official contenders for the Democratic nomination.

(235 posts)How close is she to the Iisues that won 72% of Maines dem primary vote?
I'd guess as a Sec of State she's got a variety of ideas about protecting elections, voting etc.
Everyone running in an election is now a 'fighter. it's an obligatory flag to fly. But when you fight, and I do mean fight, you put yourself up against opponents who don't share your ideas and that you desire to force into submission/retirement. No doubt Collins needs to be retired by someone. Does Bellows have a reputation for landing a (rhetorical punch)?
I know little about the political landscape in Maine. I mostly hope that Maine picks a candiate that can tap into the energy that Platner once had,

(235 posts)I'm just trying to understand what happens in Maine.
I think she finished in 4th by a small amount and don't know what that means for Mainers
The round one votes were all close.
I know that close a finish might make people think there wasn't much difference in preference

(14,733 posts)The first round percentages are pretty close. Any of the would be a stronger candidate than platner, but my hope "from away" is for Bellows.

(14,733 posts)In the first round, Jackson and Bellows placed 3rd and 4th respectively, so their votes were reallocated to their voters second choice candidate. Another round of reallocating would have happened if no one got past 50% in the second round.
Shaw was the first choice for more voters. Pingree ended up being the first or second (or third choice, if there were three rounds) for substantially more voters so she won in the final round
They were all in the same ballpark first round, so any of them would be a great candidate. I would be delighted if they nominate Bellows, but whoever is selected will be stronger than Platner against Collins.

(10,272 posts)due to his felony conviction It was overturned by the courts. She and her family had to move out of their house after Trump went after her. She is a fighter.

(235 posts)Are you saying she tried to keep Trump off Maine's ballot in 2024???

(11,358 posts)It might be more efficient to only mention the people not running for this seat.
Not here, of course. Obviously, I am running for this seat.

(11,358 posts)I did get an assortment of Native temporary tattoos at a carnival in the 80s that I now recognize as cultural appropriation. I realize, as an Irish American, eight year old me should have chosen a shamrock or a drunken leprechaun on a forearm at best.
I apologize to my spouse, to my community, the voters who have no idea who I am, and to the cats who are getting fed five minutes later than usual because I had to write this apology.
I'm sorry.
