Hi all, there have been several posts about dog and cats lately and I wondered what critters DUers have for pets.
I have a cat. And here he is stalking a Mockingbird.

Thread updated to delete farm animals and add rabbits. Forgot about the bunnies. Oops!

(25,699 posts)She's healthy, but apparently her owners got her in '97!

(1,014 posts)I have a cat and a dog, and 2 kids that I count as pets on some days, depending on how messy/rowdy/loud/gross they are.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)She's 17, show's no stop of being a pain in the butt with whining for real chicken. I have another that is 5, and I adore her.

(3,109 posts)Sadly, we had to have our eldest cat, Pugo, put to sleep last New Year's Eve. I acquired her in 1999 when she was about 8 years old. She was the terror of the neighborhood until her last year, and she began to fade after thanksgiving. The last week she began to fail and we knew it was time. She was a wonderful old gal.

(22,308 posts)and I have not replaced them. As a rule, I am a dog owner. I also like cats and even had a bird way back when (also a rabbit for a while).
Anything with a personality is good by me. Reptiles, spiders and fish just don't do it for me. To me they are more like living decorations than pets.
No, I did not vote in the poll since I don't have a pet right now.

(22,308 posts)But I worked over 60 hours last week and I really think taking on another pet right now would be a mistake.
Tikki
(15,030 posts)and we will go to the animal shelter, for sure.
Tikki was 14 years old and was our baby the whole time.

(731 posts)Picked them up at the humane society on Dec 1st. My boys (9 and 11) think I'm "Mother of the Year" for getting them a 'real' pet. The rats, goldfish and tortoise didn't cut it.

(50,566 posts)Cats seem to be the pet of liberals. Freeps like having animals that they order around and they can control, like dogs. The kitties ain't having none of that!
Coyote_Bandit
(6,783 posts)Though I do suspect that the vast majority of those with therapy dogs are of a liberal persuasion. They would be the folks who invest their time and energy and money into training a dog and then continue to make the same investment to share the love and acceptance of that dog with others.

(18,183 posts)and if the ducks , geese , various birds and turtles I feed in the wild count it is a bunch
but Cat Mandu and his sister Lilith Ashlee are the only two allowed in the house. I do have several grand doggies though , two black labs, the sweetest pit bull on earth a Jack Russell that we will not discuss and my sons several Heinz dogs.I love them one and all!

(78,610 posts)five dogs; five cats; a pond full of fish (koi, trout, etc); and numerous bird-feeders.
Years ago, I also raised rabids, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and pigs as pets. (An auto wreck took away my ability to keep up on that.)
I also grow an outrageous number of roses.

(31,092 posts)from a friend that died. I would love to get another dog but these cats have been thru so much I hate to trumatize them again by bringing in a dog. I really miss a dog, getting to walk them and take them along. I really do love those cats so much though.

(21,896 posts)Though my last cat, Animal, passed away a few years ago and I've not gotten another one yet.

(8,554 posts)We have a fourteen year old collared dove, who provides the soothing sound effects in our home, cooing continually from his enormous cage as he taunts and teases the wicked predators he shares living space with.
Two of the cats are very old ferals who were adults living in the woods when we moved to this property, so I have no idea how old they really are (at least fifteen yrs old, tho), but I trapped them, vetted them, and eventually tamed them; they are now loving house cats, but still very much on the wild side.
My third kitty is a dear little brown tabby who I brought here from Ohio after my dad passed away 11 yrs ago; she was a tiny runt kitten, half starved, hanging on my parent's screen door in the middle of the night, yowling for help during a terrific thunder storm. Soaked to the bone, we first thought she was a rat, except for the feline sounds she was making, ha! She was most likely also born to a feral litter from the woods behind my folks' place but is now a wonderful spunky cat, tho the underdog in our house, as she never grew up to normal size and the other two like to lord that over her...they are three times her size. Unfortunately, I will most likely be losing my sweet little Joey this week, as something happened to her while I was busy out of state this Spring and she is now close to death. One trip to the vet cost us an arm and a leg, only to be told what we already knew, that she is extremely ill and nothing much can be done. I am only glad that she found me in the first place and slept curled on my shoulder for all these years, a better friend I've never had. As she lies here on my lap, I already miss her.

(11,464 posts)One is like a Russian Blue cat adopted from shelter
this describes him perfectly, smartest cat of many we have had over the years
http://www.animalsites.net/news/cats/russian-blue-cat-specs-pictures/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Blue
the other is a orange/brown calico type
We lost at 17 years old, our white cat last year during Hurricane Sandy (to old age).
It was really sad.
About a month later went to two different shelters, and just by luck the one we found was there.
Most loving, playful smart cat (and I am only the second favorite of him in the house).
Like the article says, he very much acts like a dog in some ways, and can open and close shower doors, cabinet doors, and closet doors.
Likes a little crumpled up paper acting as a ball, and also likes tennis balls
Have had dogs in the past, miniature schnauzer's.

(47,953 posts)But not a dog. Would like one, but we travel too much to really do one justice. That and having to put in a fence. In our house, amazingly, the Rat is Queen....

(4,713 posts)I have a 6 yr old German Shepard (java), 6 yr old rotti/chow (princess), 3yr old Rotti (diva) & 4 cats (Cinderelli, Gustopherson, Sebatsian, & Nelson).
I just swicthed phones or I would share pics. We were fortunate to foster Java & Princess when we deployed so we wouldn't have to give them up. Now we are one big happy family. The rotti does have some identity issues she relates better to the cats than the dogs.
