People become vegetarians for many reasons: concerns about animal welfare, concerns about the environment, and even simply concerns about their health. Well, how about anxieties about your unborn childs penis?
Thats the message PETA posted to Facebook in a video called Eating Chicken Can Make Your Kid's Dick Small.
According to their video, phthalate a family of chemicals used in plastics, paints and packaging leads to male children being born with a smaller penis. The video goes on to say that these phthalates have been found in chicken flesh. In their words: The more chicken consumed, the smaller the dick.
The study PETA is referring to is a 2008 report by the National Institute of Health. The report manuscript itself doesnt make any explicit link between chicken and a child's penis size, or in fact any reference to chicken at all.
...
Ben Williamson, senior international media director at PETA, told VICE: PETAs humorous new video is simply trying to warn potential new parents about the link between eating chicken and stunted penis growth. Chicken flesh has been shown to cause higher levels of the phthalate Mono(2-ethylhexyl), or MEHP as its better known. Thats a fancy name for a chemical that can shrink the penises of unborn children.
He concluded, Our new ad is simply trying to help people who are concerned about the development of their unborn child. Its a humorous video with a serious message.

And now this.
Anyone who belongs to PETA or supports them is being screwed over big time, or is simply stupid.

(94 posts)I am neither stupid nor screwed. The center for consumer freedom is working overtime to demonize an organization that works tirelessly to expose the well-concealed horrors of animal exploitation industries.

If you want to be a vegetarian, be my guest. My son and his wife are vegan at home and vegetarian abroad, making it easy to have them over.
If you want to advocate for humane treatment of animals of every description, please have at it. The Humane Society and the ASPCA in the US need all the help they can get.
But PETA? Please.

(94 posts)I do not agree with Peta's pr philosophy that any pr is good pr. However, I do know that if it were not for the antics, they would receive no attention. I have been a member for a very long time and I keep up with all their work. PETA does most of its work behind the scenes. Ever hear of Santa Cruz biotechnology, its dozens of awa violations and the sudden disappearance of its entire (several thousand) animal inventory? No ? Why? Because no one covers it. PETA is working with universities to try to implement alternatives to the antibodies provided by Santa Cruz. It is also trying to make the usda do its administrative duties when it comes to holding this company accountable.
This is just one recent example; there are so many more. Please go to peta's website and read about its investigations. Once you do that I want you to get back to me and tell how or why I should not care. Thanks.

(40,416 posts)They have zero credibility.
Plus, they go on record for the end of animal pets.
And making ice cream from human milk! What's that called? Nipple Ripple?
And they have associated with groups like animal liberation front which was arrested by the FBI.
My dog (so to speak) in this fight is that I despise ideological groups who have no ethics and make shit up merely to serve that ideology.
Again. Fuck PETA!!

(5,946 posts)I dislike their attitude toward pets. Factory work can be good but mostly they tend to be over the top.
They are against breeding and pro spay/neuter. They are blamed for cleaning up the disposable pet mess people leave behind.

(5,946 posts)when they used to free animals from farm that were not bred to survive in the wild because death was better than slavery? there was lot of crazy in the 80's and 90's. I have not heard it changed. the attitude that pets were better off dead than in slavery used to get to me.

(94 posts)That was alf. And it it pure propaganda by the center for consumer freedom people, the Richard Berman group who is pushing that crap. It's a pr group made up of people who benefit from animal exploitation. Most of these posts have Berman written all over them. He's an anti animal, anti environmental, pro industry whore.

(14,691 posts)I used to be a member but I got tired of their stupid antics that had people talking about everything but the fucking issue they were trying to make them aware of.
I grew up eating meat, going to the zoo, dating hunters and using products without considering how they were produced. My sister brought a PETA magazine home from college and I educated myself. I learned that humane slaughter was a myth, that animals are beaten and tortured in their transition from sentient being to carbon monoxide laden slabs on styrofoam. I learned zoos bred animals for a constant supply of crowd-pleasing babies, then sold older, excess animals to horrible roadside zoos or canned hunts where they were nothing more than tame sitting ducks. I learned state game commissions purposely manipulated populations for a constant supply of prey, sometimes killing predators who dared compete with hunters. I learned cosmetics and household products companies tested products on animals for nothing more than liability defense and that animal tests didn't protect humans from anything. I learned male chicks from laying hens were shredded and male calves born to dairy cows stuffed in crates to suffer horribly for tender anemic white flesh.
I compare my animal rights epiphany to my political awakening. I received a history degree knowing very little about the horrors perpetrated by my own country. The Dulles brothers and Kissinger were discussed only in glowing terms. I could not depend on professors or media to expose the truth, I had to try to figure things out for myself.
I urge anyone who cares about animals to look at what PETA does behind the scenes. Go to its website and read about its investigations. Accomplishments are never discussed in mainstream media; only the absurdities are given attention ( I disagree with Peta's PR techniques). Recently, for instance, PETA stopped ridiculous nih funded experiments on baby monkeys where said monkeys were taken from their mothers and isolated to induce stress. This went on for 30 years. It was a boondoggle that finally ended last December.
Chimp research is ending, circuses are eliminating elephant acts, sea world is ending whale breeding....none of this would have been possible without the hard work of those who want to see animals live their lives with dignity.

(16,230 posts)Certainly reasonable arguments can be made for reducing or elimination our consumption of meat, but this is not one of them.
If there are phthalates in chicken flesh then it's likely that there are phthalates in other places, maybe even in fruits and vegetables, so the solution is to remove phthalates from our environment.

(15,882 posts)One couple finally got caught after they had a party and filled a dumpster back east with animals they took for adoption. Maybe they figure the animals wouldn't get hurt any more that way. Kittens, puppies, whatever. Feel free to google it - and those are just the ones that got caught and charged. As an org they they are big proponents of the killing we do in city shelters - 4-6 million a year, even though that insures we have more overpopulation problems.
There are some good folks, just like anyplace. But watch yourself, and your pet, around them. Some aren't above stealing your animal if one of them decides you aren't caring for them like they think you should. And with an organization, like a terror cell, it makes their communications more effective. And, like cops, or anti-abortion protesters, they will cover for each other no matter what they do to your family because - as in the story above - there is no law as just as their own.
