Harvard defensive back Ben Abercrombie - a freshman from Hoover - suffered a serious neck injury in Saturday's season opener against Rhode Island.

Harvard Associate Director of Athletics said in an e-mail to AL.com that the school had no new information about Abercrombie, but Hoover baseball coach Adam Mosley said in a tweet that Abercrombie suffered paralysis but was alert and able communicate today.

We got a good update on Ben this morning.

Abercrombie, a standout for last year's Hoover squad that won the Class 7A title, collapsed after hitting Rhode Island receiver Marven Beauvais early in the second quarter of Saturday's 17-10 loss to Rhode Island, according to the Boston Herald.
