Tim Kaine makes fundraising pitch for Doug Jones, says Alabama Senate race 'winnable' for Democrat
Former vice presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., is calling on his supporters to raise money for Democratic Senate candidate Doug Jones, calling Jones "exactly the kind of Democrat who can win in Alabama," in a fundraising pitch sent Tuesday.
Kaine, whose PAC contributed $5,000 to Jones's campaign in May, is now urging his donors and supporters to open their wallets for Jones, who faces Republican Roy Moore in the Dec. 12 special election.
"This race is winnable. Doug is running against one of the most dangerous Senate candidates I've ever seen -- a candidate who has suggested the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook was punishment for America's immorality, and that being gay should be illegal," Kaine said. "These views are plain scary, and they don't represent the views of the people of Alabama, or America."
Jones, a former federal prosecutor, is a single-digit underdog in the race, according to recent polling.
