Tornadoes possible with storms expected late tonight and Sunday, weather service says

All of Alabama will run the risk of seeing severe weather this weekend, starting late tonight and lasting into Sunday.

And just about everything is on the table this time, including tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain, according to the National Weather Service. ... The weather service in Birmingham cautioned that a strong tornado will not be out of the question, either.

Weather experts continued to urge Alabamians to have not one but several ways to get severe weather alerts -- especially overnight. ... A NOAA weather radio is one option (make sure to have batteries in case the power goes out).

There are multiple smartphone apps available as well that can alert you if a warning is issued for your location.

Thinking of the people who might be impacted. Ourtime is usually in May. Be safe.

It's always the right season to have a NOAA weather radio.

Hawaii has reintroduced a warning siren for nuclear emergencies, something that hasn't been done since the end of the Cold War. We didn't have NOAA All Hazards Radio back then, but National Emergencies are also broadcast through the system. Do you have a NOAA All Hazards Radio?

NOAA Weather Radio

NOAA Weather Radio (NWR; also known as NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards) is an automated 24-hour network of radio stations in the United States that broadcast advert-free weather information directly from a nearby National Weather Service office. A complete broadcast cycle lasts about 3 to 8 minutes long, featuring weather forecasts and local observations, but interrupted when severe weather advisories/warnings/watches are issued. It occasionally broadcasts other non-weather related events such as national security statements, natural disaster information, environmental and public safety statements (such as an AMBER Alert) sourced from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Emergency Alert System.

About 133 transmitters have been made available online at http://noaaweatherradio.org/. Weather Underground discontinued live streams of NWR broadcasts in 2017.
