Should Donald Trump pay $30,000 back to city of Madison? (al.com)

While the Madison city council ponders soliciting an attorney general's opinion regarding the Donald Trump rally that cost the city more than $30,000, an idea has been floated to make Trump pay for the rally himself.

A petition on Change.org is calling for the Republican presidential candidate to reimburse Madison for the costs of hosting his Feb. 28 rally at Madison City Stadium. Police estimated 12-15,000 people attended the rally.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 217 supporters have signed the petition.

The petition was started by a grass-roots organization called Madison Taxpayers Against Waste, Fraud and Abuse. The group said it would present the petition to Madison Mayor Troy Trulock.

Meanwhile, the Madison city council is considering seeking an outside opinion on how Trulock handled the Trump rally. Council members said Trulock did not communicate with them in advance of the rally and that they had no voice in $30,000 of taxpayer money being spent on the event.

Madison city council head: We learned of Trump rally from schools superintendent

The Madison city council learned of the Donald Trump rally that was held in the city last month from the superintendent of the Madison school system, not Mayor Troy Trulock, according to the council president.

In a statement to AL.com, council President Tim Holcombe said he attended an event with Trulock while preparations for Trump's presidential campaign event were ongoing and the mayor never mentioned it to him.

Trulock, in a statement to AL.com on Tuesday, said the council learned of the Trump rally being relocated from Huntsville to Madison at the same time he did.

Madison City Schools was involved because the rally was held at its football stadium.

The council has been critical of Trulock after the city incurred more than $30,000 in costs associated with hosting the Trump rally.
