Daikin to pay $5M settlement to West Morgan-East Lawrence water authority
Attorneys for West Morgan-East Lawrence Water and Sewer Authority this morning announced a $5 million settlement from Daikin America Inc. involving industrial chemicals named in a recent EPA health advisory.
The settlement, which is subject to approval from a federal judge, resolves claims the authority and some of its customers filed in October against Daikin. The lawsuit alleged the company's Decatur plant discharged chemicals into the river and that they entered the authoritys downstream water intake. The authority's similar claims against 3M Co. and its subsidiary Dyneon LLC will remain pending.
"Daikin has set an example that 3M should follow," said Carl Cole, a lawyer for the authority.
Residential customers of the authority will divide $450,000 of the settlement, officials said.
