Auburn asks fans to refrain from rolling damaged oak tree at Toomer's Corner
In the wake of the fire that burned one of the oak trees at Toomer's Corner late Saturday night, Auburn officials are requesting that fans refrain from rolling the tree following this weekend's game against Louisiana-Monroe, should Auburn walk away with a win.
The request was announced by Auburn interim assistant vice president for communications and marketing Mike Clardy through a release on the university's website. The restriction on rolling the tree on Magnolia Avenue will remain in place "until further assessment of the tree's health can be made."
The tree on Magnolia Avenue was intentionally set on fire last weekend following Auburn's 18-13 win against LSU when a man lit on fire a piece of toilet paper hanging from the tree before walking away. Auburn police later arrested 29-year-old Jochen Wiest on charges of desecration of a venerable object.
On Monday, Wiest was also charged with first-degree criminal mischief, a felony in the state of Alabama.
