House minority leader calls for state Democratic officials to step down

The Democratic leader in the Alabama House of Representatives called for leaders of the Alabama Democratic Party to step down Wednesday, citing the party’s failure to advance its cause in a year when Republicans are vulnerable.

“We’re not giving the people a choice,” said House Minority Leader Craig Ford, D-Gadsden.

Ford sent an open letter Wednesday to party chairwoman Nancy Worley and state Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Joe Reed, asking both to step down in favor of new leadership.

Ford’s complaint: The party is on “life support” and hasn’t fielded candidates in many statewide races in a hotly contested election year.
