Interest in a human rights group?

Hello Activist Headquarters,

Given the amount of other topics that are discussed in GD, I have noticed that threads on human rights generally fall fairly quickly to the bottom and get very few replies (most notably the ones on North Korea). Maybe there are only a limited amount of people who are truly interested in discussing this, so I propose starting a human rights group.

Specifically I'm looking to discuss human rights issues that don't get much notice to provide information about them in the hope of finding more core activists to help spread the word about them.

My goal is to find at least 20-25 members to be able to justify having this new group.

If this is something you would be interested in, please chime in and also recommend the thread.

Thanks,

David

Ps-If anyone is interested in helping to recruit people please post this in your sig line

and would love to have a place to at least recommend action for folk detained in dreadful places for standing up for human rights. Just posted a thread asking people to email the Saudi Arabia embassy in D.C. to stop the flogging of the blogger. For those of us no longer able to engage in a lot of physical activity, the chance to write letters and send emails is a way to continue to express our concerns.

Good luck!

It's been about a month and I really want to get this group going. I will be sending out invites to a discussion about how we might move forward on getting the group started.

There is also Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.), based in Montgomery County, which does a number of local and international events. R.E.A.L. has worked together with Amnesty on China events. But we really must not forget LOCAL human rights issues as well, and R.E.A.L. is currently dealing with a local issue in Montgomery County.

We are gearing up locally to confront Issa. Most of us do not even live in his district but we are going to do what we can.
