Analoak, a disabled woman who lived in group homes, was at the Alaska Native Medical Center Wednesday night when she was arrested for hitting a nurse, according to charging documents in the criminal case against her.
The 47-year-old was booked into jail that night.
On Sunday morning, less than four days later, she was found dead in her cell at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center in Eagle River, the Alaska Department of Corrections said.

(92,948 posts)What a terrible thing to happen. I have a niece who may need to be institutionalized eventually and I fear for her when that happens. She is also Native American and I fear for this group of people, perhaps more than other minorities.

(20,877 posts)When it comes to mental health, this country has nothing to offer other than jail. It is a disgrace and what happened to your SIL is a perfect example of this failure. No one wants to fix it either - not even on the radar.

(767 posts)This state has a big problem and it starts with the people PAID to take care of people. Those who are paid to protect and serve are NOT doing their job. When justice is served then the killing will stop......Go luck with the corrupt crooks up north like the corrupt crooks here..........

(6,831 posts)If she has a child's mind, she probably didn't even understand that she did anything wrong.
A staff member should have spoken with her, explained that it was wrong to hit. But call the police ? File a "criminal" complaint ?
Does anyone practice common sense anymore ?
My heart breaks for your loss.
