At least 60 dead ice seals found along Alaska coast

Dozens of dead ice seals have washed up along Alaska’s western coast in the past month, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association, and no one knows why.

At least 60 dead mammals have been reported along the coast of the Bering and Chukchi seas, including 18 carcasses in an 11-mile stretch of shore north of Kotlik and dozens off of Stuart Island, according to the NOAA.

Spokeswoman Julie Speegle told the Daily News that marine mammal experts are headed out to the affected areas to perform necropsies before any cause of death can be determined.

“These dead seals have washed up along the shores of a very remote area of Alaska,” she said. “We don’t know much at this point.”
