Alaska may not get REAL ID waiver by deadline

FAIRBANKS — Starting next month an Alaska driver’s license won’t count as valid identification to enter Fort Wainwright and some other federal facilities unless Alaska receives another waiver.

Like most states and territories in the United States, Alaska’s state-

issued identification cards don’t comply with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. Alaska IDs now are scheduled to be invalid for entering federal installations as of

Oct. 10 and invalid for airport checkpoints in January 2018.
