A few weeks ago I sold Democratic Underground. The new owner is EarlG (also known as Dave Allsopp), a long-time DU Administrator and co-founder who has been a part of this community since the very beginning. He knows DU as well as I do -- probably better. He is a decent, loyal, trustworthy human being, and he is a great friend to me. If you take away one thing from this announcement, it is this:
Democratic Underground will be fine.
But I hope you understand that for EarlG, purchasing this website was not without risk. He had to take on a fairly significant amount of debt while we are in the middle of a global pandemic *and* an economic downturn. In my final act as a DU administrator, I have been working to organize a summer DU fund drive to smooth the transition to new ownership and help ease some of the financial burden. When the fund drive begins next week, I hope you will become a DU Star Member and GIVE GENEROUSLY.
Ive been agonizing over what else to say to all of you about this. Moving on from DU is kind of a huge deal in my life -- after all, Ive spent nearly two decades running this website -- and I feel like I am supposed to be passing along some nugget of wisdom to all of you that lives up to the enormity of this moment for me. There are so many things I could say, but after much consideration Im just going to say this:
Thank you.
I am so grateful to everyone who has been a part of this community over the last 19 and a half years. What a wonderful, happy, friendly, stimulating, sometimes aggravating, and most of all rewarding journey this has been. I still cant quite wrap my head around the idea that I created a virtual space where thousands of truly decent human beings would choose to spend so much of their time. It seems unreal. This is first and foremost a community of people, and the truth is that Democratic Underground would be nothing without all of you.
During the darkest days of the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries, when many DUers were viciously tearing each other apart, the three DU admins were deeply frustrated with the state of this community. So we put our heads together to figure out a positive vision of what we wanted DU to be. During that process we drew a Venn diagram on the whiteboard in our office, and it remained on the whiteboard for the last four years to remind us what we wanted this community to be. Here is a picture:
Looking back over the last 19+ years of running this website, I think I am most proud of the fact that this is what DU has become: A community of friendly, progressive Democrats.
Thank you especially to Dave and Brian (whom you know as EarlG and Elad) my fellow DU Administrators. I could not have done this job without your friendship, expertise, support, and hard work. Dave, I am particularly grateful for your wise counsel over all these years. You have provided indispensable guidance and support that made me a better admin and made DU a better community. Brian, I am in awe of your technical knowledge and skill, as well as your patience and dedication. We came up with a million crazy ideas that required countless hours of programming, and you always knew how to make those ideas a reality.
To the rest of you, I want to keep in touch. Heres how:
Im not going to be here on DU nearly as much now that I dont work here, but I am dipping my toe into various social media sites and I want to keep in touch with all of you. To keep things easy I grabbed a single username that I could use across many different sites: @DavidAllenNow. *Everyone* is welcome to connect with me, whether you are a long-term DU members, a new DU member, a lurker who never signed up for DU, a former DU member, a former Discussionist member, or even a banned or flagged DUer.
If you connect with me I promise Ill follow you back...

(5,969 posts)DU was a needed retreat during the Bush years. This function became even more obvious after the 2016 election and the hack when one couldn't connect to the like-minded people here anymore. Losing that during one of the darkest times makes you realize how important it is.

(7,470 posts)I was enraged with Bush/Chenny after 9/11 the Iraq and Afghanistan. I was so excited to think Obama could be President and things as a whole could be better. I got tired of yelling at the TV and all the misinformation to say the least. Then I found DU and finally a place to get information, opinions from like minded people. The info, links provided and sources to find the truth in most cases was a godsend and have been here ever since. A sincere thank you and all involved for giving a place to go and to occasionally spout my thoughts. Best of luck to you you and to all involved.

finally editing now, probably no one will see it but I guess everything is ok. this announcement was a real shock - 2020 has been an unfun rollercoaster and this was another potential dip. but after some weeks it would seem DU is running fine, though I thought you might have checked in more with a post or two or some recs. a funny thing happened when I checked just now - clicked on the link and went to your FB page and there was Nadin, ranting away about something.
I don't know how those things work and I have been avoiding that place for most of the year so far, but to see that at the top of your feed...what can I say? it seemed kind of perfect in a way. like the dysfunctional family that this place often is.
I hope all is well, we never interacted all that much but I will always be grateful that you let MFM back in when he got tossed on a post misunderstanding and for doing the lounge thing when he died. thank you.
for the bigger picture, this site has been and continues to be one of the best discussion sites I have ever come across. thank you and the rest of the guys for starting and continuing it all these years. the changes have been good, even for this change-phobe and I look forward to seeing what is next.

I discovered DU in the dark days after 9/11 and lurked until 2003. DU saved me when the world felt like it was spinning out of control with the Bush administration and the media hopping onto the bandwagon that pushed for a war that to me seemed ill-conceived and just plain wrong. It was here on DU where I found like-minded individuals.
Although I don't post a lot, DU has continued to keep me sane for over 17 years (especially recently during this current administration) as I come here each morning for my news and for the brilliant commentary of many of my fellow DUers.
Best of luck with your future endeavors, David, and thank you again for having the vision to create and guide this important website.

DU got me through bush/cheney and helped me keep my sanity! That's something I will NEVER forget. I've met a lot of good folks here - online mostly, but a few in person. Enjoyed every encounter. Friends and fellow warriors.
The struggle continues. The fight MUST go on. The vigilance must NEVER falter or ease up. This has become my home-on-the-net since 2001 and I fully expect that to continue.
Hope you'll stay in touch. You did good.

I want to thank you for founding and creating Democratic Underground.
DU has been my online home since I started lurking sometime in 2001, pre-9/11. I finally joined as a Star Member in October 2004. Over the years, DU has been a lifeline for me and for so many others.
I wish you all the best for a bright and happy future! I know your family will enjoy being able to spend more time with you. Good luck with your creative endeavors. Please us know when you publish your book! Keep us updated about your digital art projects!

(18,904 posts)I've been a member of DU since about 3 weeks after Sept. 11 As you say, first place in the morning, on and off to check headlines through the day, last stop at night.
I was with my grand kids today when I read you were moving on. I really had to hold back tears. I know D.U. has been around a long time, but I didn't realize it was almost a third of my life. Being able to come to this site has been a comfort to me, for everything from politics to the death of my husband.
I wish EarlG and Elad good luck as they move us forward. I don't think I'm alone saying that DU is not just a lifeline, but the IV for our country.
I'll watch for the fund raiser and be glad to kick in on it.

(64,070 posts)I started reading DU in 2004, I think. Maybe it was 2003. I lurked for a long time, mostly in the Lounge. I remember the day I picked a handle and joined, and eventually started posting.
Over the years on DU I realized that I was gay, left a marriage, got married again, built a new career, bought and sold and bought a house, watched my kids grow up.
I got into big fights on DU, got banned for a while, got reinstated with amnesty, watched the Admins evolve on gay rights and watched DU become a friendlier place for gay folks. There are still too few of us here. And still way too few people of color. But despite everything, DU has been and still is my home.
I'm particularly grateful, David, for those times when I've reached out to ask something and you responded quickly and graciously.
Thank you. I wish you the very best in all your future endeavors. Thanks for leaving us in good hands.

Skinner, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you've done. We're going to miss you. You wanted to get out before election day, huh? Probably a sound move, at least mentally. I'll say so long for now.
EarlG, although you've always been with us, you're about to undertake a new aspect of DUship. I have to ask you though, are you freaking crazy? Right before the most important election this nation has ever faced, and you're going all in? You're a brave man, but we'll all be here with you. If there should ever come a time when the financial aspect of DU ownership becomes too dear, don't hesitate to start fund drives on a regular basis. I believe we started out with them quarterly, if I'm not mistaken. We want this place to last forever, and without DU there would be a whole bunch of people walking into walls, jumping off rooftops, talking to themselves, and be just plain LOST! DU "completes us". Congratulations on your new baby!

I've appreciated the dialogue, and I've learned and progressed a lot in my wisdom from the discussions. I'm one of the people who learned about DU from Bartcop, visiting occasionally until 9/11, when it was one of the few places people could relay information quickly when all usual news outlets were completely clogged. Living just across the Hudson from the Towers, that was kind of important. Shortly thereafter I hopped on as a member, and have stuck around since.
I love the Venn diagram. I'm biased, of course: by my lights I'm right in the center of it. Left of "center" but not really "The Left(s)" either, and above all recognizing that weight of numbers matters, organization matters.
The past 20 years would have been a bigger hell than they were without this touchstone. Thanks.

I've been here since DU.1 (early 2003) and I don't know what I would have done without DU over the years, it's more than a website for so many of us, it's become my home. So thank you for giving us a safe haven to gather with kindred spirits during so many turbulent times. And, speaking for myself, thank you for the opportunity to get quite an education. Please don't be a stranger!

(2,791 posts)I first found DU via The Rude Pundit. He provided a link and urged his readers to surf on over, check out the site, and send a few bucks your way. I lurked for a long time, mostly out of fear that I wasn't informed enough to make intelligent replies to the posts. This place has helped a great deal, both with keeping me informed and sane. It is hard for me to believe that so much time has passed since I first came to DU. You will be missed! I wish you the very best of success and happiness in your new venture.

I want to congratulate you, too, for something I'm not sure anyone else here has mentioned (not sure -- I haven't read very many replies, was in shock when I saw this topic this morning, checking DU for the first time since a couple of hours before you posted this yesterday).
I want to congratulate you -- and your fellow admins -- for keeping Democratic Underground going, and growing, IN SPITE OF FACEBOOK.
I saw Facebook do massive damage to a lot of other online forums, completely shutting down many of them as people were lured away from interacting with wider groups into Facebook cliques. I saw this happen even in forums where people were posting with aliases because sensitive subjects were being discussed, subjects that could likely cause rifts with relatives, friends, coworkers and even employers if those people were honest about their feelings on Facebook. I've known many people who realized later that being lured into spending most if not all of their online time on Facebook was a huge mistake (and this was even before we knew about the privacy problems there, the foreign meddling, the platform's apparent bias, etc.), but that was too late for a lot of forums.
DU withstood the virtual maelstrom of Facebook.
I am so thankful to you (and to EarlG and Elad) for that.
For continuing to provide this sanctuary and debate forum and amazing information source for all of us.
I wish you all possible blessings and luck, with everything you do.

(44,245 posts)DU was a haven for many of us during the Bush years. It was a less fun place during the Obama years, especially during the 2016 primary, for the reasons you listed above.
But DU was always here for us, and you gave us the tools to make our DU experience exactly what we wanted it to be.
DU was home. And it still is.
Wishing you and your family all the best in the future.

(7,334 posts)Since then I have been here and gone...more often gone in non-Pres Election cycles.
But I have ALWAYS come back.
I have suffered the slings and arrows of being a left progressive & I have occasionally fired back; I have sipped of the sweet juice of the vine after progressive victories, and I have most of all made some lifelong friends.
This site is a real lifesaver for me as I am a diagnosed chronic depressive with (at times) severe anxiety; the friends I have made here and the support of ALL, let me stress ALL, even those I disagree vehemently with politically, has been such a comfort to me in my times of need.
DU has saved my life.
Thanks Skinner, may your road be full of good. Sending an agnostic prayer your way.

(54,159 posts)for creating this safe space for us to vent, celebrate, mourn and, above all for me, learn. I have been here for most of the time with a couple of sanity 'vacations' from all politics and have been a host, served on MIRT, participated in the testing of this latest version before it fully introduced and learned so much from each of these activities and, most of all learned much from fellow DUers.
Thank you so very much, I will be donating and renewing my star membership during next week's fundraising to do my small part to help EarlG to keep DU in the 'family'.

Thank you, Skinner, for being so awesome! I've been not so active in the last decade, but this place was such a home of sanity and fellowship after Bush's election and after 9-11.
You rock beyond any normal human being's ability to rock.

(16,254 posts)I remember during the Bush fiasco when I didn't have anyone to bitch to or explain what all was going on. I felt the world was changing before our very eyes and I needed a comfort zone. I had no idea what I was looking for, but searched for "Democratic Party" and found DU. I instantly felt at home and "lived" here for hours on end. You saved my sanity and my soul.
Nearly 20 years? WOW! We've fought a lot of battles in that time and have the ultimate battle before us. Don't totally leave us. I'm sure "Earl G" will take good care of us, but "Skinner" will always need to be around, somewhere. When Trump[ gets trounced, you need to come back and celebrate. It's gonna be one holy rockin' party, that's for sure!
Good luck with your new plans/future.

(1,020 posts)Back when the Supreme Court decided the election for Bush, I felt like I was the only one who wanted all the votes counted in Florida. The media showed interview after interview with people who just wanted to move on. I thought I was the only person who couldn't move on.
Then I stumbled onto your site through Bartcop and realized there were others like me. I wasn't alone.
I lurked for a couple of years before joining and am not a prolific poster, but this place has kept me sane.
