Related: About this forumMeet the new boss, same as the old boss
Hi everyone,
If you haven't seen Skinner's announcement yet, I suggest you check it out before reading this. But here's the bottom line: I'm the new owner of Democratic Underground.
Back in the summer of 2000, David Allen was running a one-man design shop for local small businesses and the occasional Democratic Congressperson who needed one of those new-fangled "websites" that everybody was talking about. Having picked up more work than he could handle alone, he hired me to help out. Just a few short months later -- inspired by the Bush coup of 2000 and our discovery of FreeRepublic.com -- we came up with the crazy idea of trying to build an online home for folks on the left; a place to get away from the conservative propaganda and trolls that infested the message boards of the era, and fight back against the right-wing media machine. David and I launched Democratic Underground on January 20, 2001. He called himself "Skinner," I called myself "EarlG," and a few months later "Elad" joined the team, first as a volunteer programmer and later as a full-time employee.
I remember well a sneering post on Free Republic at the time they first discovered the new DU. A Freeper wrote, "Whatever. Go back in eight months time and they won't even be there."
Twenty years later, we're still here.
Sometimes it's hard to believe that DU has been around since before Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. DU was even around before "blogs" were a thing -- heck, we're only two-and-a-bit years younger than Google! Many, many sites have come and gone over the last twenty years, but DU is still going strong. And that is all thanks to David's efforts.
I understand and respect David's decision to move on, and I know for a fact that he has never wanted anything but the best for DU. I have personally witnessed him agonizing over difficult, sometimes impossible decisions on how to run the place. He is literally the most fair-minded person I have ever met, and he always wanted to do his best for everyone who posted here -- even the people who hated his guts. He didn't make much money doing this, and a lot of people spread a lot of nasty stuff around the Internet about him over the years. Speaking as someone who watched him work every day, I can tell you that it was 100% garbage. David always had my back, and never let me down, and if I can do just one thing for DU, it will be to do my best to keep running this place the way he would want it to be run -- as fairly and equitably as possible. And I'm deeply grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to do that.
I'm going to miss working with David. He's taken me to some amazing places -- I'm sure you recall our reports from past Democratic National Conventions -- and he gave me the freedom to be creative in a way that I can't imagine any other boss would have. Honestly, if I wasn't doing this, I don't know what else I could do.
Hopefully, I'll be able to build on his legacy. Next year will be our twentieth year in operation, and I think that DU is due for a new coat of paint. So next week we're going to run a Summer membership drive -- one which old-time DUers may get a kick out of! -- and once we get past the election, our next project will be a visual refresh that, if all goes well, will keep in place all the things you love about DU, while making it a little easier to read and navigate -- and maybe even add in a few new features.
In case you're worried about any of that stuff, please don't be. Like you, I love DU -- it's the first place I go in the morning, and the last place I go at night, and I'm here all day in between. This is our home on the Internet, and my goal is to keep it that way. I hope you'll stick with Elad and I as we move forward.
Here's to Skinner, and to DU.

There was a discussion (ridicule) of a writer who used to be on DU. THere was a link. I clicked on it and either saw Auntie Pinko responding to a question about whether voting republican would make you richer OR Bob Boudelang. I knew Id found the place for me.
Thanks for everything and we will be making a nice donation soon. Pandemic money.

(978 posts)Been lurking since Obama was named the nominee. Signed on because the vitriol is so bad at other sites with no logical reasoning at those sites. This place helps to keep me sane and have great people with answers to help see us through the times. Thank you for taking over the helm of this great ship.

(54,362 posts)when that terrifying yellow notice showed up and looked like DU was going to shut down. For some reason, whether I was here posting, just checking in to read or, sometimes taking a complete break from all politics for my own sanity, I always assumed DU would be here if or when I would want to come back and that notice made me realize that was not necessarily the case!
Thank you for choosing to continue DU as I am sure it is a big undertaking to purchase it from Skinner!
I will be kicking in during your fund raising next week, renew my membership as I now realize DU will not always be here without all of us doing our small part to help with the cost, etc.

(12,201 posts)I am certain that you will be able to do justice to what you and Skinner created. Not a high post count but I was around reading before the 2004 election and joined right afterwards. Like you, this is the first place I go in the morning (even before getting out of bed) and the last place I check in before closing my eyes. Through DU, I've found fellow Delawareans, UD grads, like-minded (and some not-so-like-minded) online friends. It's a place I go to when I have questions of all sorts - political, general knowledge, kids homework, cooking, gardening, when I needed support going to the loss of my mother, or my cancer surgery, etc., or even if I just need a laugh or to find a feel-good story.
DU is a true community - thanks to you all for building this online village!

(11,686 posts)It would have been very unnerving had someone from the outside purchased DU. We still have someone we trust and who will not let DU be changed so much that we would not recognize it.

(56,552 posts)What happened to that signed card I had Stan Lee send to DU 11 years ago?
I hope it is still hanging on someones wall back there!

(3,064 posts)DU was such a refuge from the nightmare Bush years. And now things are even worse.
But they will and are fixing to get better, much better. I love DU. Been lurking from the beginning when I first heard of the place from the righteous Okie blogger Bartcop. RIP, Terry Coppage, aka Bartcop.
And is Free Republic still around? And if they are has RimJob spent so much as a dime to upgrade his cesspool? It was primitive way back in the early '00's.
And this place has continued to evolve and grow. Some of the most eloquent and incisive writing I've ever read has come from people who post their brilliant insights on DU.
I've never vowed to stay away from DU if the infighting starts to get nasty. There are days I don't check DU but they are few and far between.
I have only one request to Earl G. How's about a heaping, steaming bag of Hate Mail on a regular basis. We can handle it. After all, " We are the smart."
And thank you so much Skinner for the incredible work that has gone into constructing this wonderful community.
You'll be around, even if not as an owner. And please continue to post. Your insights, how things are going. Hell, if you take your dog to the vet and are worried about your critter.
Dear sir, the organization you owned, helped found, and put so much work into is flourishing.
So many thanks.

(18,578 posts)This is a tough time everywhere and many organizations are getting leaner. It's never pleasant but it is business.
Please let Skinner have some unemployment or severance or whatever.
Seriously, it's great being here. Maybe you could have a sort of Grand Re-Opening/Re-Introduction thread somewhere.
Maybe the Lounge?

Hope you won't stop, but I personally will miss Skinner. He's helped me out more times than I will ever admit.
