Joe Biden has announced that Nato countries will provide Ukraine with five new strategic air defense systems as leaders began a summit in Washington where the alliance was expected to declare Ukraines path toward Nato to be irreversible.
The promise of weapons deliveries, including anti-air defenses sought after by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy, came just a day after a deadly missile strike against a paediatric cancer hospital and other civilian targets in Ukraine that Biden called a horrific reminder of Russias brutality. All told, Ukraine will receive hundreds of additional interceptors over the next year, helping protect Ukrainian cities against Russian missiles and Ukrainian troops facing their attacks on the frontlines, said Biden.
The headline speech was a critical step to convincing foreign leaders that Biden, 81, remains up to the task of leading the 32-member military alliance. It was also a key test in saving his presidential campaign following a disastrous debate against Donald Trump that led many in his own party to question his mental acuity.
In forceful tones, Biden said: Before this war, Putin thought Nato would break. Today, Nato is stronger than its ever been in its history. When this senseless war began, Ukraine was a free country. Today its still a free country and the war will end with Ukraine remaining a free and independent country. Russia will not prevail, he said to rising applause. Ukraine will prevail.

(16,344 posts)This is the sort of headline we should be getting from our news outlets. "Forceful" to describe our President's speech. What do we get from US news? "Feeble" "Old" "Confused"
Our media is going to be the ruination of our democracy if they don't stop with their Biden bashing. As my late mother would say, "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it."

The fear, hysteria, and desperation is increasing more and more among the media outlets, where they have been going non-stop in such an OTT fashion, and it's now obvious that something is "very wrong".

(20,120 posts)If they thought Americans generally despised the MSM before, well, they sure as shit do know.
We need to do to the rest of the media what we've done to Fux over the years. Contact their advertisers and complain. When the people who write the checks start telling them to shut the fuck up, they will shut the fuck up.

(16,344 posts)just yesterday I had four different people I spoke with bring up the fact that they are no longer watching any TV news, and two of those four even said, "not even MSNBC". These were in separate situations and not a group setting of any sort. Just people I volunteer with and a good friend and a sister. Including me, that made five of us.

(6,022 posts)this war would not have happened. Putin would have backed down immediately. His initial excuse for the war was that he worried about the "threat from NATO," although Ukraine was not a NATO member and NATO is only defensive. The second best response would have been to arm Ukraine to the teeth, to mount a massive defense and force Russia to back down. Standing up to Putin is the only way to deal with him.

(113,131 posts)I read somewhere or other that Russia exploited a narrow gap in defenses to attack the children's hospital.
Ukraine shot down most of the missiles in that attack. They just missed a few critical ones aimed at Kyiv. Another system or two might be able to plug the hole.
