Shannen Doherty, Star of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, Dies at 53: 'Devoted Daughter, Sister, Aunt and Friend'

Source: People

Shannen Doherty has died after years living with cancer, PEOPLE has confirmed. She was 53.

"It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease," Doherty's longtime publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE on Sunday, July 14.

"The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace," Sloane continued.

The Beverly Hills 90210 star was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.

I know she had a reputation as being difficult, but she was a talented actress. She in my opinion did a brilliant job as Prue Halliwell on the original Charmed.

about a woman having to start a new life in a small town whose residents are obsessed with growing giant pumpkins. Froth, of course, but entertaining.

90120 had an episode where her character found a lump in her breast.

I’m sorry for her suffering.

As Norm McDonald pointed out, you don't "lose" a battle with cancer. The cancer dies with you. It's a draw. Meanwhile, RIP Shannon.

I had a monster crush on her back then.

That crush evaporated with stories of her relentless unpleasantness and right-wing views.

Nobody should suffer like that, though.

Really hard to work with. But cancer is an equal opportunity killer.

And the guy from ALF that died from heatstroke. My guess it that's going to end up a suicide, though he took his dog with him. I live daily with the danger of heatstroke, as I do not sweat properly, if at all. It's no fun to have it, either. Painful and scary.
